Forums - Sony - Flash poll: What will happen to Sony/SCE in the financial trouble?

For reference, here are the facts of Sony's financial position as of the last quarter:

Long term debt: 649,414 million yen ($7.29 billion at today's exchange rate)

Total debt:  1,098,942 million yen ($12.34 billion)

Cash on hand: 700,923 million yen ($7.87 billion)

Cash + short term investments: 1,176,081 million yen ($13.24 billion)

Since then, there have been reports of partial debt refinancing which probably means they now have less debt and less cash.

I don't think I'll comment..

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

For the gazillionth time, SCEWWS makes money. Why downsize that?

It's the hardware that hurts Sony.

That's about what I expected, even though I took a lot of heat for that position.

You people think they will accually discontinue PS3?? Let alone cut off SCE?! What are you guys nuts?
Jeez..

Something tells me you haven't put a second of thought into the matter, let alone read some earnings releases to actually be informed about Sony's current position.

Discontinuing the PS3 or cut-off SCE is definitely not the number one option imo. Not the #2 or #3 either. But completely laugh it away tells me you have no idea of the seriousness of Sony's trouble at the moment. Shareholders WILL demand action. And as mentioned numerous times before: SCE is Sony's worst performing Division. So please tell me: what EXACTLY makes you think these options are completely out of the question?

How about reality, they are a hardware manafactuer.  They didnt rid of their cameras or tvs did they bud.

As if they could cut all of SCE just like that, yahh that be smart and easy and cheep to do.  LOL.  The logistics of it are impossible for them to cover.

How about reality: They're a consumer electronics company that for the past two years has EARNED money on camera's and televisions and LOST money on their game division. How hard can it be. And it doesn't take a lot of knowledge to know that the cost of a layoff/sale/merger will obviously be much preferable to just letting things be, otherwise we wouldn't ever see mergers and acquisitions/layoffs/sales.

Because, It just won't happen.

That's all that needs to be said, k?

Really good arguments here. Thanks!

Let's make some calculations here. $1.1-2.2 billion loss for the fiscal year, with Q1 and Q2 having generated almost $1 billion in profit... So they're saying Q3+Q4 will see a $2-3 billion loss.

Can't say I'm surprised, that's just what I was predicting.

Sony is definitely in a bad position now but I doubt they'll stop Playstation 3 production. The console should at least gain some of the money back they lost (hell not all of course but at least a bit).

I'd expect them to be less agressive when it comes to price-cuts, though. What is more interesting is the long-term damage they'll take: I doubt Sony will use billions of dollars for R&D of the Playstation 4 or the next Playstation Portable.

They will be in a weaker position at the beginning of the next generation and there will - of course - be restructurings in the company. But I doubt Investors will be shortsighted enough to try to force Sony to stop PS3 production. The format is too important for Sony.

I voted for downsize.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I voted for downsizing of some studios. PSP and PS3 and PS2 will be fine though. PS4 and PSP2 are coming.

It'd be hilarious if SCE could post a profit though.

One idea would be... Microsoft were to buy SCE (and the playstation brand) for $12 billion, take all the rights to 1st party games, kill off the PS3 and make Killzone 2 a xbox exclusive. This way sony could pay off all its debt and start a fresh :). But if this was really to happen, MS would make back $12 billion in no time.
