Well from a business standpoint it's more likely more devs will be going multiplatform, most devs havn't been finding it difficult or expensive to port their games onto the ps3. What I don't like to see though is a rushed game trying to milk the market by coming out on every platform possible though, pc, ps2, ps3, 360, wii, ds, psp and i-phone.
CoD4 and 5 have both sold extrememly well on both consoles making lots of profit. |
Yeah but look at bioshock, 2.24m>.3m and I'll bet 2k wishes they could have that money back. I realise this is an exception to the rule, but the risk still remains. And look at the effect of timed exclusivity.

all from big developers or sequels, and multiplat, but not outstanding sales combined. and all sold better on 360 not by much granted. the new tombraider underworld sold better on the ps3 a little bit... but lets look at exclusives in the last couple months
lbp 1.8m, resistance II 1.2m, socom .56m where as GEOW2 4.21m, fable II 2.34m, l4d 1.1m...First off exclusives are where the money is at if you ask me and just in the last couple of months 360 has made a strong statement to developers imo, even if the cost to develop were the same for both, which i doubt they are. Then look @ ww game sales up. no ps3 in top 10 and only 1 in the top 20 vs 5 xbox360, top 30 3:8. I don't know if you're a betting man but I would bet, if I developed a game it would sell better on 360 and would sell even more if I made it an exclusive, which can be said for both consoles, but attach rates and market share can persuade a dev one way or the other. The question still remains how much does it cost to develp then port as opposed to just develop? I don't know so I really can't say with certainty that the opportunity cost is or isn't worth it, but i'd guess it costs more to port. Just to go back to the thread, I live in the U.S. and I own a 360 and a wii.
And I can't agree with you more on your last point Theo. That oversaturation = more $ philosophy is more like oversaturation = junk games!
