Forums - Nintendo - GTA: Chinatown Wars is first 18 rated game for Ds.

Rockstar’s Chinatown Wars becomes the first title to receive BBFC’s highest games rating

The British Board of Film Classification has announced the Rockstar’s upcoming DS title Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is to be granted an 18 certificate – making it the first game on Nintendo’s handheld to carry such a rating.

A spokesperson for the regulator confirmed to MCV that “yes, Chinatown Wars is the platform’s first and only 18 rated title”.

Other details to be found in the game’s online listing include the fact that no cuts were needed to obtain a UK release, and that it contains 168 minutes worth of in-game cut scenes.

The game also contains “very strong language and drug references”.

well at least it actually got rated. Means it might even be rated in oz, even though dealing drugs is a big no no according to our MA15+ restrictions.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

So GTA:CW was rated A instead of M? Nintendo does not allow A titles to be released. Expect a tune down.

 Ehm, no. It was rated 18 in the UK. In the US Nintendo only allows games rated Mature or lower, but in UK, there is no mature rating, so games in this range are either rated 15 or 18. Nintendo allows games rated 18.

So the mentioned Resident Evil game was probably rated 15 in UK.

What about Sega casino, i know thats an 18.

      I traded my Wii for a PS3  :)

Resident Evil is rated 16+ by PEGI rating and 15+ in UK. PC version of Resident Evil is the only one with 18+ rating, and that's only in UK.

 So it's fine then :P

I thought it was going to suffer the same fate of Manhunt 2 or (probably) MadWorld.

@Chibilobolib: BBFC didn't rate it. It's 18+ by PEGI.
Chinatown Wars isn't the first 18+ game on DS, but it's the first DS games rated 18+ by BBFC.
