Forums - Gaming - Best video game villain!

Don't hate on Arthas Weezy, and btw Illidan very much is a villain. He goes insane after he's defeated by Arthas (in fact in his head he won the battle) and believes he has become an all powerful god, launching attacks at the Alliance and Horde. In WoW BC you kill him, and Maiev (who apparently didn't die) delivers the final blow. I don't actually play WoW anymore (quit more than a year ago) but I watched the video on youtube.

Arthas is certainly a villain among villains. What made him special was his transformation. I tend to prefer villains that go through a lot of changes (Kefka goes from being a clown and a lackey to a god, Kerrigan goes from psychic to demonic lieutenant of the Zerg, etc.). Arthas, in line with my 2 other favorite villains, goes from being a Paladin and doing what he thinks is right, to doing anything for power, and being corrupted by that power that he finally gains. The scope of his transformation is pretty huge. From Paladin to the Lich King himself, Arthas is truly something special among villains. Ranking my 3 favorites it would go:

Kefka
Arthas
Kerrigan

All 3 of them are great though and if you haven't played their games I highly recommend you do.

Honestly? Medivh. (well, the evil spirit (i forget its name) that lives inside him).

"But alpha, he isn't a villain!" you might say!

Well, think about it this way --

Medivh opened the dark portal, first leading to the orc/human wars in the first place.

Medivh is directly responsible for almost everything that happened in the Warcraft 3 era... he may have been disguising it as trying to help, but his hand was apparent in *everything* that happened. Furthermore, IIRC his knowledge of demons is unparalleled... perhaps because he is working with them? Perhaps he orchestrated the entirety of the burning legion's invasion of azeroth -- it is certainly within his power and what we know of his backstory for this to be reasonable.

Now, while it is certainly possible to view the Warcraft universe in a way other than this... the fact that he had such incredible advance knowledge, and his influence led to:
1) The worldtree's destruction
2) The fall of Arthas
3) The fall of the Human kingdoms
4) The creation of the Scourge
5) The merging of Arthas with the Lich King, making an entitiy more powerful than either could hope to be separately

Well, even if he did not cause them, the events taht happened under his watch, with the level of intelligence we know he has, coupled with the fact that we *know* magic is able to control demons (see warlocks in WoW for proof)... well, it certainly is plausible that someone with the power we know Medivh has and the past history involved in his roles in the warcraft universe... I certainly would not put it past him to have engineered the whole situation.

Please, PLEASE do NOT feed the trolls.

wtf.  Arthas will unleash hordes of undead to obliterate you for your insolence.

and psh at genetics causing you to be psycho.  Kefka was something special.  It takes real evil to go from being a clown and a lackey in the service of the ones you suspect to being the true villains of the game to becoming a god and destroying most the world, and then deciding to extinguish all remaining human life and assert your dominance and immortality.

I honestly hated Sephiroth as a villain.  He's a factory made generic evil guy, and if he hadn't been on the first PSone final fantasy no one would care.  Even his genericness wouldn't have been that big of a problem if he hadn't had such a ridiculous story.

Hey! Slimes aren't bad... they are just misguided. :(

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Yeah, I really liked Light as a villain for the same reason.  The only thing that I dislike about Death Note is them killing off L, but Light was a great character so the stroy carried on well after that anyway.  Good connection there, he goes through a similar transformation.  From a normal student, to (what he considers to be) a rightous hero, to a man simply bent on claiming power for himself, and killing any who threaten that goal.

Just to change the beat a little, Soulblighter from Myth.

He removed his face and cut out his own heart in order to achieve immortality and incredible sorcerous power. He gets around by transforming into a murder of crows.

And can you even take a villain seriously if he doesn't have a legion of undead thralls at his command?
