They announced the public Windows 7 Beta wuld be up for download today with "only" 2.5 million download slots in total. But they didn't specify a time. The sheer amount of people wanting to get in has completely destroyed microsoft.com, and because people don't know they time they continually refresh which makes the problem about 10x worse.

ya. a downlaod limit on the site... what stops torrents?

My thought exactly. Practically they're encouraging the use of torrents and such. What good is an open yet limited beta if you can get it despite the limitation without any drawbacks? I'm not sure but I suppose the beta doesn't even have online activation or anything like that, unlike the retail versions. Even if it does, it gets cracked pretty fast.

Yes; actually the build leaked a week before today. The reason to get it officially is that a) it won't suddenly break due to updates and b) they gave Vista beta users a free copy of Vista Ultimate at the end...

It'll be worse when it's up - 2.5million x serveral GB equals...

Vista is the scandal of the decade! I have never seen such a big disappointment and imbecility (mental retardation) in my life. I hope Windows 7 will be better.

Maybe I should be more eager to get into this beta then :P

Vista is great! After SP1 I have had only great experiences with it! I am looking forward to windows 7, too. It takes everything bad about Vista, makes it better, changes some visuals, adds features like full touch support and DX11, etc!

They've realised the problem and have pulled the beta completely. The TechNet page is taken down. Surely a corporation of that size would know how to deal with public interest on that scale? Fail.
