Forums - Microsoft - Is 360 hate in Japan still because of the war?

iPod, US fast food restaurants (even if they serve some local things), Apple and Dell computers, Microsoft Windows/Office... I can name so many things, they simply in gaming prefer brands that they relate to, Nintendo and Sony do that...

Ehm, no.

Japanese certainly love some American products, like vintage Levi's Jeans, iPods.

The 360 doesn't have any legacy, is fugly, has a name as a shooterbox, bad quality reputation, etc. You see that sales improve dramatically now some Japanese minded games are on the machine, but you can't expect Sony-level sales based on a few second tier JRPGs.

Well i do not think that War has that much effect, i think Japanese really prefer their own products.

Plus its the Wii and the DS (along with the PSP) that cater to they taste more, Japanese gamers really do not give a damn about big badass games with mind blowing graphics.

Same, and ofcourse the ugly design...

The weird name... xbox???

And Brand Loyalty is a BIG thing :)

Nintendo & Sony both have generations of good customer relations.

simple: Japan loves Japan

Japan is partly a collectivist country, not an individualistic society like the US & EU.  That means they tend to do what is best for the whole--their family, their country.  When you ask an American "Who are you?"  We tend to reply with a name or a career--an individualistic answer.  In most Asian countries, they will reply with something such as "I am Japanese" or "I am the third son of ....."

This is important in understanding Asian countries because they are more likely to support their own products--Not always, but often the case, especially if they feel a foreign product will HURT their own.  Thanks Psychology class & Global Economics!

Another important factor to take into account is that Japanese like reliable hardware.  And the 360 started out pretty rough in that department.  Although, MS has made a lot of improvements, it takes time to freshen a tarnished reputation...and you ARE seeing some improvement in 360 sales now that MS has made improvements.

I think Japan does have certain a amount of a xenophobic culture. But for example the ipod does well because they all so love a good fad/trend.

I dont know about you but both of those sound like improvements.

"iphone isn't doing so well in japan."
That's due to the iPhone having vastly inferior technology to Japanese phones from 3 years ago.

He was talking about HW, I think. While it was improved significantly, without the games and the price it wouldn't sell as well.
