The big issue for SE is the "worldwide" part. Because aside from Final Fantasy, their bread is buttered in Japan.

Can Square Enix hit it big with a new IP outside of their home country?

This I believe is what they are attempting to do with the Dragon Quest series by putting it on the DS and Wii and with the "advertising" nintendo hinted at it looks like they are going to try to make Dragon Quest as or nearly as popular as FF worldwide. I hope they can cause I love both franchises.

Satoru Iwata is brilliant, the only reason why Dragon Quest is still small here is because Enix didn't bother until the merger, Square was smarter, they made a deal with Sony to massive West marketing and publishing, FF7 became huge because of this and it brought them to the mainstream... Ninty is doing now with DQ what Sony did in the past with FF and worked great...

That's not true; they have Kingdom Hearts. Also, they should persuade Ninty to make Mario RPG 2 on the Wii. That'd sell same (Mario & Sonic) amount of millions. Or a joint Nintendo-SE game with characters from both.

Gamers to SE: Then release freaking FF XIII already :D

And besides I thought they don't want my money after all they have SO4 as X360 exclusive :D

FFVII Remake? Come on Square, you know that is what the people want. Release it on all platforms, it will do millions. In addition the development cost should be very small. All the assets are ready to go thanks to art work from series continuations, and the story is already done. Keep the old school gameplay, and give the people something simple. It would be the perfect way to get a whole new generation of kids into FF.

I'm not sure it can catch on with the Wii masses. Dragon Quest is one of those franchises that probably won't ever be made easier and "casualized" because Japan likes it the way it is. Every one of them is a grind.

Finla Fantasy 3 sold well on the DS even though it was not "casualized." They are both Blue Ocean Products.

They could port Final Fantasy VII for the PSP!
It would sell million of copies and the costs would be pretty low.

Final Fantasy =/= Dragon Quest

Of course a FF game sold good, it's FF. DQ on the other hand would be much too hard for some 6 year old kid if a parent bought it for them on the Wii, assuming DQX is like every other DQ and is 100 hours worth of grinding. It's not a "blue ocean" type Wii game.

I think everyone is ignoring the real issue, and it's the same one many other developers are facing: development budgets have raised so high that games need to sell multiple millions of copies in order to turn a profit. The problem is the audience interested in said games hasn't grown to match this need.

Did you ever even game as a kid? Grinding is what kids do best. I played the shit out of Dragon Warrior I, II, III, Monsters and Monsters II as a kid. WAAAAAAAY to many hours of my life; but the series has been one of my favorites since I was like 10 years old. And FF1 is basically straight grinding; I got into that when I was like 7.

You say that Final Fantasy sold well because "it's FF". Which is exactly what SE is trying to do; establish DQ as the kind of game that sells (much as it does in Japan) simply because it's Dragon Quest. Difficulty and causuality are not the issues here; branding and marketability are.
