Forums - Sales - NA numbers are up!

Okay guys, use your heads here. How is it even a question what happened? The DS was the most popular video game system throughout the year and at Christmas in particular the US. Here are two possible explanations:

1) Suddenly and without warning, the demand for the DS completely fell apart and very few people want them anymore.

2) The system is supply constrained.

Which seems more plausible to you?

Maybe a typo on DS numbers

Well fishyjoe says to wait for an explanation before assuming supply constraints, and now I don't know what to believe

(I'm kidding I assume supply constraints also)

shouldn't this be the week where the PS3 passes the 360 cause the kids going out with gift cards or christmas money are able to buy the system they WANT and not the cheapest system their parents give them that they don't want.

No, the kids cannot buy DS because it is sold out.  Likewise, there are not a lot of Wii's out there so most of the kids cannot buy it.  Maybe most of the kids are waiting until the systems they really want are back in stock?

Expected lower numbers after the holidays. DS sales are a bit strange, but after such a sales heavy holiday nothing surprises me.

Regarding the PS3 / 360 gap:

In the previous week, the ratio was 2.13 360s per PS3. This week, it's 1.77 360s per PS3. Slightly worse, but still outselling it by 77%.

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

That is pathetic for DS.

I imagine DS has supply issues, in the popular (read: not pink) colours anyway.

That is what it is like in the UK anyway, the only DS models I see in stores are pink ones...

funny you say that about Pink... I over heard a GS worker say that was the most popular color... it kinda makes sense... 50% of DS owner are girls you know.

Also the lack of Common sense around here is amazing. The DS is supply contrained. There IS Not other logical option, sales do not drop like that over night based on just demand.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

#1. A lot of people had birthdays and are no longer 12 and under, so they have no interest in the DS anymore. John Koller was right!
