LG goes official with its NetCast effort

As we heard at the LG presser, the company is getting in on the Netflix, CinemaNow and YouTube streaming game with its NetCast feature built into select LH50-class LCDs and PS80 plasmas, so you can pick your pixel flavor. It's definitely getting crowded in the space, but the Yahoo! Widget Engine angle is what sets this offering apart. Combined with PC connectivity, we're anxious to see support for MKV and more coming down the pike. Fun times ahead, and we won't argue with the arms race-like competition between vendors to shoehorn more functionality into the living room. This is a definite threat to console internet access. Ofcourse thats if people are still watching Television anymore.

Sony unveils Walkman NWZ-X1000 OLED touchscreen player

Just as rumored, Sony's indeed showing up at this year's CES with a touchscreen Walkman, the NWZ-X1000. Front and center is a beautiful 3-inch touchscreen OLED display, which means lower power consumption and a wider color gamut than a traditional LCD, and Sony also worked in WiFi and headphone-independent noise cancellation. The player will come in 16GB and 32GB flavors. Details are otherwise scant at this moment -- we're particularly interested in the software specific and price, which we're guessing Sony will be announcing at its press conference this evening -- but let's just say that faux granite shell is a definite mark in the "please, yes" category.

LG shows off GD910 Watch Phone, production later this year

Now that we have serious buy-in from a major phone manufacturer to bring watch phones to market, we're just going to go ahead and say it: the Dick Tracy era has begun. LG's just announced that the GD910 will start production later in 2009, featuring 7.2Mbps HSDPA, Bluetooth, speakerphone, video calling, voice recognition, an integrated music player, and a touchscreen in case those three side-mounted buttons don't cut it. We hope to have a hands-on shortly!

I can't work out when the Sony conference is, according to the CES website, it is 8:30am in the morning on thursday, but I dont know what time period that is, and it disagrees with that Engadget post

Sony should be unveiling that new Walkman and their P series Vaio (their netbook)

Yay, gadgets! That walkman looks really slick! But I don't dare guess at what price it will be selling at xP

LAS VEGAS - Toshiba Corp. is planning to use the Cell processor, the brain of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 game console, to create an ultra-powerful TV set-top box that can record up to six high-definition channels at once and improve the look of any video.

The box and a separate flat-panel LCD TV will be sold as a package this year in Japan for between $5,000 and $10,000, said Scott Ramirez, vice president of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products. It may come later to the U.S., he told press gathered Wednesday at the International Consumer Electronics Show.

Toshiba has been experimenting with several different ways to expand the use of the zippy Cell processor, which was jointly developed by Toshiba, Sony and IBM Corp. Toshiba has demonstrated laptops and TVs with Cell processors, but the PlayStation remains the main use for the chip.

The Cell TV box will accept video content from cable, memory chips and other sources, raise their apparent resolution, then send the video signal wirelessly to the TV, Ramirez said.

"You're going to have the cleanest picture you've ever seen," Ramirez said.

The box will also be able to record content to a hard drive, like a digital video recorder. It would thus combine the functions of several different set-top boxes, but it's unclear how it would work with cable or satellite hookups, particularly when it comes to recording several channels at once.
