The wii will sell as much or more than the Ps2, but its no PS2, AND NEVER will. The ps2 got all the big games, all of them.

No it didn't. Don't be silly.

Nice way of jumping on Legend guys. Let me repeat what he tried to say.

Why would third party spend more money to create bigger games when they don't have to in order to make a profit?

lawl, are you back in 2007 too?

I think we've heard that same argument way too many times to count...yet devs seem to not care.

1. Lowest cost
2. Highest userbase

There you go. Reason enough. Or should the PS2/DS also gotten only shovelware...because they sold them well too? I mean...no point when they sell those well right?

Yet devs pretty much say "**** you" to people who say that.

the fact that you guys feels the wii deserve the big games is funny. This is business and thanks to the market, the wii has shown us that small budget games can do pretty well on it.

The wii will sell as much or more than the Ps2, but its no PS2, AND NEVER will. The ps2 got all the big games, all of them.

First off, the PS2 didn't get all the big games because (obviously) games like Halo, Mario, Zelda, Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart were not released for it.

Now, when you look at how games like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess and Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition have all sold as well (or in most cases better) than similar games in the previous generation it becomes clear that there is a massive demand for games that are more complex than what most third party publishers are producing.

quite sad indeed. The PS2 was the standard, it dominated in everything, but the wii is far from that. yes, it sells tons, but it's no PS2.

What, that PS2-only owners never got to play two of the best (and best-selling, natch) games of the last generation? Agreed.

Or do you mean that I named two? That's what a "couple" means, man!

You know I wish adults could occasionally conduct a serious discussion without it turning into another  fanboy pecker measurement contest. This is so old. I don’t care what console you have, or want or got the f**k rid of. I don’t even care what you think about the Wii and I’m sorry if its overwhelming success ruins your day. That has been talked to death.

This thread was inspired by Developers acknowledging that they needed to learn how to serve this new and rapidly growing community. It a trick to try to survive. The idea here was simply to sort out some of the basic market difference. Whether you think we deserve the “big” games or any games at all is irrelevant. The developers will decide.

The biggest fundamental difference between the two market groups is this. The majority of HD console owners and fans are male, from 16-30. The games that do well are the games designed for them, by other males and reviewed essentially by the same group. Unfortunately it is a group that sometimes tends to be defensive, intolerant loud and abrasive, especially the younger members. They tend to judge the world strictly in terms of their own tastes and viewpoint. Until recently the entire gaming community pretty much danced to their tune because that was the bulk of the market and still is a key part.

However they are not everybody and the Wii tends to appeal to a portion of the young male group but also attracts others which are not as much drawn to the PS360.

I did not cut him off, it is simply a case of asked and answered. I have answered several times. The crap games have quit selling that well and developers that put the effort in are being rewarded. Since EA and others started writing sports games for the Wii they are selling more. Some games are actually receiving better critical reviews and sales compared to their HD versions.

When a console is brand new, you can sell almost anything but now that's just not true. A lot of the games the HD types dismiss as inconsequential are merely games that are not aimed at that demographic. Wii Fit is certainly an example of a phenomenally successful game that is target at everybody other than the hardcore gaming group.

To pretend that everything sells because Wii owners are stupid and uninformed is disingenuous. It simply isn’t true, a lot of bad games just plain fail. Take Looney Tunes : Acme Arsenal. If we accept the simplistic view that Wii users are children and uninformed Grannies buying them presents it should have done well. It had a very attractive cover generously populated by well loved cartoon characters including Bugs and Daffy and promised a good old shoot them up. It was fairly well publicized when it was released way back in Oct., 2007. It also happens to be a truly awful game and it has managed just 130K sales in over a year.  There are plenty other flops including tie-ins to popular movies.

A lot of the games you dismiss as casual crap are written for a younger group, females, adult males that want a different experience. Don’t any of these groups deserve games? Is there a law that it is illegal to write a video game especially for young girls?

Does it also ever come up as a possibility that there are people who don’t happen to live for the next GTA or MGS. There are people who have a broader definition of quality than body and pixel count.

That I think is an adequate answer. It is not a thread to try to steal developers away from SERIOUS IMPORTANT games or even to talk anyone into developing for the Wii. Nor can we keep them from developing crap if they have so little pride and really think it will pay back. But there is plenty of evidence that better games sell better. If that is still not a complete enough answer then I can’t help you.

^Yeah..!^

I don't buy the Wii audience only buys quality argument.  There are games like Boom Blox, Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes, Bully, Call of Duty: World at War, Madden NFL 09, and others with very good reviews getting beaten in sales by games like Carnival Games and Smarty Pants.  Hell, Carnival Games reviewed so poorly that it doesn't even make it into the top 200 Wii games by rank at GameRankings.
