Forums - Gaming - Dear Mr. Game Developer, Here's How to Tap Into the Wii - An Open Letter

FaRmLaNd said:
I would argue that wii sports has infact has a much much larger impact on the wii success the any other game on the console. The wii line of games has only further emphasised this.

It'll be interesting to see how wii sports resort sells.

wii sports resort will sell because of the success of wii sports which is because of the controller and it will sell because of the motionplus attachment bundled with the game

Grampy,

On a console where Carnival Games, Game Party, Deca Sports, Smarty Pants, and others trounce most third-party hardcore games on the system why in your opinion should they take more risk, spend more money, and go against what is selling for third-parties on it? On a system where Wii Sports and Wii Play completely dominate sales and are very likely the reason why many people buy the console why do you feel developers should instead make games that the majority never bought the console for?

Please prove this because this seems to be the words of a troll.

Prove it?  I thought it was common sense and universally accepted that Wii Sports is a major reason for the Wii's success and can be attributed to selling many Wiis.  That it's the biggest system seller of all time.  Do you feel otherwise?  Please tell me what game you feel attracted more people to the console than Wii Sports.

As for accusing me of trolling, please feel free to point out which words are trolling.  If I provide posts of other members attributing the Wii's success to Wii Sports are you going to claim they're trolling too?

the controller sells the system and wii sports helps you test the controller, the system doesn't sell because the game looks appealing, the controller helps the game look appealing, and yes u do seem like a troll i looked at ur profile u have a bunch of 360 games why do u care about the wii if ur not a troll

If you don't own a system and post in a thread about it you're a troll?  Seriously look up the word before throwing it around.  It really seems like this is a case of shooting the messenger.

if you don't own a system and bash it and think u know what ur talking about then yes u r a troll and we r using computer terms a "troll" is a supernatural being in scandinavian mythology, thats like saying "lol" is in the dictionary i guess u should look it up

Well show me how my post was bashing the system.  I stand by my statements.  Is saying that Wii Sports is a system seller considered bashing to you?  Is posting the sales of games on the Wii considered bashing?  Seriously take off the fanboy glasses because you're seeing something that isn't there.

stating incorrect facts is bashing in my opionion u came to a thread that was talking about how to make a successful game for the wii and pretty much said he was incorrect and should continue to make games like wii sports and wii play because they sell and r the most appealing to wii gamers which is incorrect they sell because of the hardware bundled with them the controller, show me another game like wiisports or wiiplay that sells 8 million and then maybe i wont consider u a troll but like im trying to say how would u know if u don't own a wii

Stating incorrect facts?  So you think it's Brawl and Galaxy that can take credit for the Wii's success?  If that's the case why didn't the Gamecube  dominate last gen with those series?  The Wii completely destroys Gamecube sales in an astonighingly short time and you don't think a big part of that is due to the motion controller killer app Wii Sports?  I don't remember Brawl on Oprah.  I don't remember Brawl or Galaxy being the media darling that Wii Sports is.  Do you think the motion controls take Brawl to the next level?  Are they even the best input device to use for that game?  Seriously this stuff isn't rocket science and it doesn't take a PhD to figure it out.

By the way what do you have against sentences?  Seriously why not do everyone a favor and use them.

its the controller point blank period, i know what i did see on Oprah the wii controller the system seller, brawl or galaxy still sold millions without a bundled controller those are the only games on the wii of there kind to sell that much which is because they have a bundled controller, u still have yet to show me the game that sells like wiisports or wiiplay that sells well without a bundled controller, i can show u two games like grampy described that sold at least 7 million without a bundled controller brawl and galaxy

f.y.i u should be able to read

sonic, guitar hero, and rockband have all outsold every casual game on the system and those are third party right instead of saying what u think state facts

for example

its a fact u r a troll

its a fact that no casual game on the wii has out sold guitar hero, sonic, or rockband all third party

It's a fact I now realize I'm wasting my time talking to someone who doesn't realize how much of the Wii's success can be attributed to Wii Sports.  It must be nice to living in denial of the reasons for the Wii's success, LOL.  Yeah it's the Wii's hardcore games that brought the crowds in and are responsible for the Wii's success. LOL. ;)  Don't bother replying because this is the last post I'll waste on you.

I hope The Conduit does well. That would show you can make an epic game, that makes plenty of cash, and have a healthy profit margin, as they did the last two gens.

The wii has nothing to worry about when it comes to games, it's selling tons of games, but don't expect high budget games for it from 3rd party developers either, it would be a stupid thing anyway.

The wii will be what the DS is, but with better competition.

Nice way of jumping on Legend guys. Let me repeat what he tried to say.

Why would third party spend more money to create bigger games when they don't have to in order to make a profit?

because bigger games sale on the system as well

redsteel, rockband, resident evil 4, and guitar hero aren't very small games and neither r there sales

do u own a wii

lol.

So what is the point of this thread then? if the wii is getting the BIG games anyway, everything is fine then.

Duh. Wii development is half. So you could have high budget games, just not as high.

My letter would have added, "MAKE SURE YOU PROMOTE YOUR GAME TO THE LEVEL OF FF VII!"

That was the game that MADE me buy a Playstation. I just could not escape it. But in thee end, the game did nothing for me yet getting the Playstation was a great decision.

Good marketing can be just as crucial. Market your game, and market it to gamers. Take the path not Nintendo. Have integrity and make your product stand out.

Look at Carnival Games and Boogie and Deca Sports (especially ads in stores like Wal Mart), they move copies because they are marketed well. Not because of the genre. Show me the big marketing for Okami. Anyone?

These are far from "mini-game" games, and they have done very well. There just aren't that many other popular games on the system like this, so the ones that have sold very high (2mil+) are few in number.

Nintendo games are an exception on the Wii (do you think if another company made a Kart game for the Wii that it would have over 12 million in sales)?  Do you think if EA or Ubisoft released Wii Music that it would be over 2 million right now?  Also correct me if I'm wrong but I think this "open letter" was to third-parties, but if it was meant for Nintendo then my bad.  And when looking at third-party games the number of casual hits outnumber the hardcore ones.

Your original comment said the main reason people buy the system was for things like Wii Sports, Wii Play, so there may not be an audience for core titles. My response was to show you otherwise - that games do not have to be mini-game collections in order to sell. The fact that the games are made by Nintendo has nothing to do with the argument.

As for "casual" hits outnumbering the "hardcore" hits, that's obvious - the former games far outnumber the latter. It's not as if there were many potential "hardcore" million sellers released for the Wii as it is. Would No More Heroes or Zack & Wiki be million sellers on the HD consoles? How about Okami? Oh, wait - that game already flopped on the PS2.

I'm just asking why third-parties should make the effort when stuff like the games I mentioned have sold millions on the system?  As for Zack & Wiki and No More Heroes, which cost more money to make, those games or the casual ones I mentioned?  I guess what I'm trying to say is that maybe the best way to tap into the Wii is with casual games.  I also think that Guitar Hero 3 for example was perfect for multi-platform for it's casual appeal.

I have been a ninty fan since the start owned them all. and i honestly thought the game was up with the dark days of the of the gc hell even had my doubts at the end of the n64. So I don’t get why everyone is complaining, we haven’t had it this good for a long long time, ye it could be better but thats the gate thing about owning a wii we have Nintendo making the best games in the world that other systems will never have.
