MGS4 sold what it did because of the ip and fans. Correct the J man if he is wrong but MGS 4 got minimal marketing and sold what it did due to the ip.
Killzone 2 is in a different boat, if not marketed carefully and effectively , will be seen as another shooter and limp to 2 mill.
And also brand recognition will not help KZ2 at all , due to the bad game that was KZ1.
We will see when febuary comes because it will become apparent if sony actually knows the basics of marketing or not.
N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!
If Sony deliver some adverts along the lines of the Gears 2 adverts MS put out, then maybe it can do pretty good.
With a price cut on the PS3 and if bundled then it could beat MGS4.
I am largely platform agnostic. I fail to understand why some people get overly fanboyish about what is an inanimate piece of electronics that's obsolete even before it's launched, when there are far more important things to champion, such as preventing environmental destruction or preventing millions of people dying unnecessarily from illnesses. This fact however, doesn’t mean I am not someone who doesn’t enjoy gaming as a pastime (as I have done for the last 20 years) or doesn’t have a strong interest in how the market is evolving – hence my presence on this site.
Platforms owned – PC, DS, X-Box 360, PS3, PSP and Wii.

It had like 4 bloody years of hype on Internet forums and magazines, a worldwide release, different bundles and a party with Hideo Kojina on the US. ....... Is that minimal?

Won't happen. Killzone doesn't have the fan base, or hype MGS4 had. It's really going to depend on the marketing, but knowing Sony.....we all know the marketing well either suck or not be used frequently.
As for MGS4 commercials... the "J" man is right. The game was not marketed much on television, atleast not in the US.
Sony won't drop the price of the PS3 to coincide with Killzone 2, but I wouldn't be surprised if they bundled it. I honestly don't expect it to ever exceed MGS4's sales without extended bundling ala MotorStorm, but if the reviews are in line with those of CoD4 and MGS4, then it will definitely sell well. A good marketing campaign would help to, but that's probably asking too much from Sony. Though I do think they did a par job with LittleBigPlanet.

They had one long commercial during some event (probably MTV awards, if I remember right). After that, there were just about no commercials for quite some time. There was also an article that revealed how Konami/Sony were to limit (by alot) MGS4 TV commercials as most the marketing went towards events, magazines, internet, and movie theaters.
I remember discussing this on a thread on this very website site when it was posted shortly before MGS4's release.

You can hype a game for years and it will not generate sales (lbp as an example) . What the J man means is that the general public has no clue what mgs is (to the best of their knowledge they might know who snake is as a character) but it still sold 4 mill which is roughly 21% of the ps3 userbase.
So how did that happen?
The answer is that the fans of mgs 4 were eagerly awaiting this game and bought it , and mgs 4 sales are in line with the rest of the series games so that should tell you the story. There may have been people who bought in to the hype but the number of fans who bought in to the brand and story far outweigh them.
KZ2 doesnt have this luxury so it will be very , very dificult or it to even pass 2.5 mill let alone pass mgs 4
N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!
its gonna have to be one hell of a game to meet all the sales hype
