Forums - Gaming - What were your overall expectations around the Wii and PS3's launch?

I was reading Sean Malstrom stuff, gaining hope that Nintendo would win.

Around the Network

I watched all the entire keynotes from E3 before PS3 and Wii launched. I saw a controller that would change the industry, and I saw a $600 console that had Ridge Racer. I thought one would be a revolution and the best-selling game device of all time and offer me several new game experiences I'd never had before, and the other one would be the best-selling $600 console to have Ridge Racer on it.

When Nintendo Revolution changed its name to Wii, I... much like the internet, was in shock. It seemed so, kiddy, pointless, and redundant. But that also is what got me interested in the Wii. After that stunt move, I knew nintendo was in this generation for keeps, and they would do everything in their power to tie with microsoft and sony.

Sony on the other hand, I expected them to fall. I didn't expect them to fall so hard though. I pretty much expected them to settle around a healthy 40% market share and watch em coast the rest of the generation.

So, my expectations were a bit blown outta the water. I predicted both nintendo getting a gain in the market, and sony losing some of the market. I didn't predict the severity of it however.

Why must JRPG female leads suck so bad?

I seem to remember that a lot of PS fans called the 360 a failure since it didn't include Bluray, and claimed that the Wii was kiddy.

I do remember many people saying the 360 isn't as future proof as the PS3 due to not having Blu-Ray (for high definition gaming as well as movie playback). This I agree with this even and that's something else than what you stated.

As for the Wii being kiddy. Yes it's more kid content orientated, but I don't see that as a bad thing, according to Nintendo the bulk of GameCube owners were kids. It doesn't mean the console isn't fun and innovative.

I saw more hostility from 360 fans towards the Wii, this may be due to following Microsoft PR. Let's compare:

Microsoft PR statements:

- "We're positioning ourselves to be ready if, in fact, gamers find they're ready to graduate from a certain experience potentially with the Wii, either because it's limited on the type of gameplay that's available or the technology in that box"

Graduate? That implies Wii users are uneducated or something. Limited gameplay?

- Regarding Wii sales: "That is not sustainable, it's never been sustainable,"

- "We think that as soon as the Wii customer turns 14, they want something else."

Wow, just wow. That means all Wii fans here are 13 or below?

"And although Wii is almost a GameCube with a DVD drive"

Ouch...

Sony PR statements for comparison:

"Wii is a core gaming device. It' s a more fun, intuitive sort of product to pick up, where the PS3 is a broader entertainment solution"

"Wii is a wonderful device, but has a different target audience."

"We feel very confident that the PlayStation fan is going to wait until they can get a PlayStation 3. If they do pick up a Wii, it’s as more of a novelty.”

So, 3 positive Wii mentions from Sony.

Jack Tretton - I think the PS3 is the Surf 'n Turf. You want the lobster and steak and you're going to give yourself the treat of getting the best thing on the menu. The PS2 is your favorite burger restaurant -- you go there for comfort food and it's just always good and is a good value.

[As for the other two consoles], one [Wii] is a lollipop, and I'm too old for lollipops. The other one [Xbox 360] I get sick from once in a while because the cook isn't always reliable.

Howard Stringer - I’ve played a Nintendo Wii. I don’t see it as a competitor. It’s more of an expensive niche game device. We’re selling a lot of PlayStation 3s now and it’s still the best way to buy a Blu-ray player

Dave Karraker - Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else

Howard Stringer - I'm happy the Wii seems to be running a bit short of hardware. The PlayStation 3 will come into its own because its infinitely more fun, demanding and exciting.

Ken Kutaragi - We don't care (referring to the wii)

So, Sony has called the PS3 a lollipop, expensive (this coming from sony, wow lol ;_)) and impulse buy and irrelevant. Where was Sony winning good will with Wii fans again?

If anything I've seen the most of the Wii hate come from PS3 fans. Most of them go on and on about how the Wii is killing gaming.

@ Electro General

I agree that wasn't very positive, but lollipop is associated with cute and tasty candy.

From a technical perspective the Wii is indeed a bit expensive for a mass market product, but that's also an important reason why it's so profitable to Nintendo.

PS3 vs 360 sales

I knew the PS3 was akin to the Titanic when they announced its launch price.

My response to the Wii was more along the lines of "Bwuh? Where's Mario?"

I agreed with what that Malstrom guy was saying at the time that is the Wii would be a success. The entity of the success however was unpredicable.

I thought Xbox 360 and PS3 would basiacally split up evenly the "niche" market that they are targeting.

I expected Wii to end the generation with sales of around 25 million. Expected 360 to get around 40 million and PS3 to be over 100 million. How wrong was I (apart from the 360 bit).

Speaking of people who thought the wii would be a resounding success, where the hell is john lucas?

Granted, some of his predictions were bull.

I expected Sony to be in first and Nintendo to be in last. I never said that I was good at predicting things.

I thought the PS3 would hold the momentum upon release but...

I thought the Wii will do well but not this well...

Never got much interest in the Xbox 360 though. But surely like to play many titles on it.

All the robberies caused by PS3 and injuries by the Wii were funny, nonetheless.
