I would rather prefer my product to have a great yearly growth over a few monthly backwards trend.

But then again you must consider the harsh times of the economic recession which will get worse before it can improve. During December of last year more people had their jobs. This December job losses have been at an all time high and an recession not seen since the Great Depression. Believe me, even my own company, FedEx is making job cut and paycheck cuts.

That being said, if we never dipped into this worldwide money crisis, we would see December 08 PS3 sales with a higher percentage tracking.

Your point would make sense if 360 and Wii sales weren't up so much higher than last year.  The video game industry actually increased sales this holiday season, just the PS3 didn't.

It is easier to come up with $199 to $250 after paying your monthly bills rather than $399. PS3 sells increased on a year by year basis, far more important than a few monthly spikes.

which would make sense except

Final numbers aren't in yet but i guarantee you video games (as in $ spent on video games) is gonna be up YOY.  Software sales appear to be up 20% over last year's holiday season.  People are spending MORE money on video games, not less.

With the reduction in the price of 360, and the drop in PS3 sales then the average console price should be lower this year, which would mean that more people are buying consoles, but individually they are spending less on them.

Yea but only the 360 has a lower price this holiday season.  The higher hardware sales over last year easily makes up for the difference in hardware revenue.  Someone is saying they don't have the money, I call BS because they are spending that much money on video games, just spending it differently.

the problem is the entry price, the ps3 has the highest, thats why saying that buying a 360 with wireless+ hdd+ live is more expencive than the ps3 is nonesense since what the consumer really cares about is the entry price, and the wii/360 have a lower entry price than the ps3.

Yea i totally agree with you but that'a different argument from what he is saying.  He is saying because of the recession people don't have the money to spend on video games, you are saying that people see a better value in 360/wii than the PS3.

People are spending more on video games due to the $60 price tag. Not to mention there are loads of cheap titles available for the 360 and Wii.

It is difficult to find cheaper priced PS3 games unless you buy used, which I dont.

I am not trying to spin anything, just posting on what I see.

It is not difficult to find cheap PS3 games, they get discounted the same as the rest. If it was in stock, I could get Resistance 2 for £20 or MS 2 for £20 both brand new

I live in America. I heard that the European territories have more Greatest Hits titles, including Uncharted. Over here Uncharted is still 60 dollars.

I hate Gamestop and would never buy used, so I had no choice to plop down the 60 for it. One of the best games ever. Cant wait for part 2.

I just got a PS3 in June and have steadly been building up a collection. So far I have R:FOM, Assasian's Creed, Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2, CoD 4, CoD WaW, Tomb Raider, MGS 4, Fight Night, NBA 2k9. Most of those I bought were at 60 bucks.

I am more than satisfied with my collection, but wish some of the older games like HS, Tools of Destruction, etc were a bit more on the cheaper side.

Fair enough, those old games are certainly worth buying and I am sure they will become GH quite soon (and the platinum games do look horrible). I though amazon did tons of deals in the US as well, and I have seen tons of blog posts about sales, though that probably does not include those 2 games you mention

I don't get what they said.

This year is 40% better than last year, and Black-Friday to 12/31 is 130 percent better than last year?

actually you nailed it but remmebr he is talking about NA only not WW.

Nope, that's not what he is saying, look:

(...)an increase of more than 130 percent of PS3 hardware sales for the holiday season--since Black Friday--and we're also seeing a growth of nearly 40 percent in total PS3 hardware sales for the calendar year.

So he says 2 things:

1) PS3 YoY sales increased by 40% compared to last year

2) PS3 sales increased 130% during the holiday season (NOT compared to last year).

Do the math, it wouldn't make sense - if the PS3 had really seen a 130% holiday boost compared to last year (which means selling more than double the amount of units during the holiday season compared to last year) the YoY increase would be much higher than 40% as the PS3 sold much better YoY for the first half of 2008.

Haha that is tricky business but I do see it now. And yea there is no way they shipped through 4-5 million like MS with the data we have to date. They had to have a lot of stock left in channel last quarter for sure.

Very much in line with vgchartz data which is great.

Of course, they didn't compare holiday sales year-on-year or indicate that the same negative momentum will carry on to 2009.

They went through the year without a price cut, it wont be the same next year. Let's not just assume that things will continue the way they are. Most predictions before the holiday said that the PS3 would outsell 360

Consoles shouldn't need a price cut every year to keep the momentum... If the PS3 drops $100 / 100 € this year, it will be half the launch price after 2-3 years (depending on when and on which territories).

IMO Sony should get GT5 (probably the best system seller) out fast otherwise 2009 will be pretty bad. Holiday sales might be good with a price cut though.

No other console has been so much more expensive than its competitors, so it does need a price cut. I agree they should not allow Polyphony as long as they want for GT 5, just cut a few cars and tracks and add them via a patch, they do need that out next holiday

Well, their console saw a 130% increase in sales during December. This isn't exactly surprising... the fact that they use the percentage increase instead of raw numbers should teach us something

Edit: They also said their console saw a 40% increase year over year. This isn't surprising, as well as the PS3 sold much better than last year during the first half of the year.

Good ol' memory

I agree that it does need a price cut as soon as possible (probably as soon as SCE can do it without being in the red, which depends on some external factors like the dollar/euro performance). It's just that this only got accepted after PS3's bad performance at the $400-$600 price.

Clearly Sony never expected to need price cuts so fast, nor did most people... I certainly didn't expect the 600 € - 400 € price cut that happened in Europe before the PS3 even saw its first holiday season. By the way the PS2 launched at 500 € here (or the equivalent at the time which wasn't €).
