Since I'm mortal I only have so much time to play games, so trust reviews every once in awhile.  I've never played a Dreamcast, but I have played most of the games because they came out on other systems. What poorly rated DC game is actually good?

Playing Sonic Adventure in 1999 is much different than playing sonic Adventure DX on the gamecube in 2003. Same with pretty much every hit that dreamcast delieverd 2-3 years before they were proted to PS2xboxGC.

You had to own it when it came out to understand...

100% signed.

It´s like playing the conversion of "The Last Ninja" on Wii today and wondering why this title influenced so many gamers. A conversion some years later is just not the same...

Some DC classics are still awesome today though.  Skies of Arcadia is still a brilliant game.

Now you're just asking for trouble.

I've noticed a trend, pretty much every gamer today agrees that Dreamcast was the best console ever.  The absolute peak of gaming, every game for DC was a gem and woe is you for stupidly going for a PS2 back in the day.  Do they really believe that, or do they just want to sound interesting?

If everyone who says "dreamcast was the best!@" had actually bought one, Sega would still be making hardware.

Where did this belief start, and why?

The amount of highly rated (85+) PS2 games is greater than the entire Dreamcast library, bad games and all.  (yes, shocking as it sounds, bad games were released on Dreamcast).

Even Gamecube's library dwarfs Dreamcast, even if you only count highly rated games.

And the few highly rated Dreamcast games, like Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue and Ikaruga, were released on other platforms.

I know there are hundreds of Dreamcast fans here, so please tell me, if you could only have one console for the rest of your life, would you honestly pick Dreamcast?

Ah yes, comparing a console who was on the market for a few short years to machines that had a full cycle.

The two years DC had on the market before the plug was pulled were unprecedented.

We got Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, ShenMue, Skies of Arcadia, Le Mans 24, Ikaruga, Seaman, Rez, Chu Chu Rocket, Samba de Amigo and a lot of other great games that for their time were revolutionary or pushed the envelope.

Now we have people here asking if the PS3 is this generations DC and other stupid questions like that. PS3 (and any other machine out now)could only hope it had such a library of incredible titles in such a short amount of time.

Ah

I wouldn't consider the Dreamcast the best console ever, although it was a pretty good game console. It did have some pretty good games on it though.

totally.

Ikaruga still rocks as well, Shenmue, Sonic adventure, Soul Cal...Jet Set Radio...lots of games aged great on the dreamcast cause they were pure fun.

while there are plenty of broken/mediocre ports- samba de amigo and get bass comes to mind.. there are plenty of brilliant ones- ikaruga and rez HD. Still DC is the only console that launched with a perfect game(soul calibur.. the only other console was N64 with mario64), online mode out of the box, 480p support and a $199 pricetag- making more money at launch than star wars: the phantom menace. Now if that isnt big I dont know what is.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

The only people that could understand what was so great about the Dreamcast were the ones that were there when it was fresh. It had an unrivaled launch lineup. It wasn't like most other consoles where you know which game you'll pick because there's only one quality game to choose from. DC launched like a rocket and you had to go broke to play all the great games at launch. Plus there were great games coming out almost every week. Not to mention it was the final hurrah of the arcade era(best era in gaming EVAR!). If you weren't there at the time, then no need to comment on something you obviously can;t understand. Is Dreamcast the best console ever? No. Was it the two best years of console gaming while it was alive and kicking? Hell fuck yes!

I never owned a Dreamcast myself but I admit that Powerstone 1 & 2 were some of the best times I have ever had in multiplayer.

They should make a Powerstone3.
