Forums - Sony - Sony on the brink of corporate upheaval, drastic changes

well im glad they are reconstructing thier business.

its about time, for sony they are and theier goods are the upmarket range unlike goods by hitachi etc. hence they will be affected by economic crisis.

so i think its best for them to cut loose specific things in thier business

PS3 was sold initially in its first year for $300 loss per console sold.

1st year: 7 million PS3's were sold in its first year = $2.1 billion in losses on PS3 just on sales.

2nd year: 11 million PS3's sold in its second year at $50 to $100 loss per console = $500 million to $1.1 billion in losses on PS3 sales.

The $300 loss was on the 20GBs, and of course it varies from region to region, as they were selling PS3s in the UK for £425, or $850 for parts of the year. What you have said is just guess work

And it was more like $250 in NA.

When I said Sony fans had better be "wary" of 2009, I wasn't joking. If Sony gets through 2009 in a similar position to where they ended 2008, it could be an excellent result.

Its obvious to me, that the primary cause of poor financial results for the last 3 years has been directly the result of the PS3. If they could release an updated version of the PS2 (same architecture, profitable, more VRAM, 480p, motion controller) they could make an insane amount of money - from day#1.

The worrying thing is that the PS3 hardware may be on its way to profitability, but there are still massive marketing costs and staff salaries that need to be paid.

Even at a fairly modest $60k per year salary average by rumoured 4000 staff, that's $250 million alone per year. Talented software developers and executives would be making far far more than that so it's possible that the number could be higher. That's assuming that Sony can run their entertainment division with the same staffing numbers as Nintendo which is considered a very efficient company. Does that 4000 include all their 1st party studios? I doubt it.

Well production cost was $250 above retail, so obviously sony sell it for less than that to the retailers

Hell, I predicted Sony's execs would all be fired within a few years, back before the PS3 launched. Nobody cared, or listened though, as the PS3 was supposed to crush the competition. (I also predicted the Wii whipping the shit out of the PS3 and 360. Nobody cared or listened, either.)

I still think the prospect of a PS4 is rather dodgy. I can't imagine Sony investors being excited by the proposition.

What Sony studio made Ratchet and Clank? Nintendo should buy them.

Insomniac.

Nintendo could buy them right now if they wanted to.  They're only second-party, so Sony doesn't really own them, their games are just exclusive, by contract, to the PlayStation 3.

I agree, SCEA and the Triple are here to stay.
