haha, fanboy goggles? perhaps you should take your own goggles off then :)

Also, I did say that the environments and vistas in alan wake look nice but overall the game has nothing on heavy rain. If you look at some other screenshots, alan wake is full jaggies and the character model themselves really let the game down. Also, there is a screenshot of a car's bonnet open and the engine itself is FLAT lol...

I don't know how to imbed screenshots but I'll give links:

Heavy Rain: http://au.ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/811232/heavy-rain/images/heavy-rain-impressions-20081211033058054.html

I also think these screenshots of Heavy Rain speak for themselves:

I'd be lying if I said that Alan Wake is an ugly game or w/e, it certainly does have its moments where it shines but when taking both sets of screenshots into account (not just the ones you posted but all) heavy rain is just in a different class. However, they both aren't due out until the end of this year so hopefully they'll both get even better but at the moment I think Alan Wake needs alot more work to be able to claim that it is visually superior superior or on par with Heavy Rain. No doubt when both games are released we'll probably see a consensus develop...

LOL. You are using 2 year old screenshots. From 2006!!!!!

I used the new Nov 2008 screenies for Alan Wake. Dude I used the latest screenshots for all games. You need to ignore the old shots, obviously in 29 months the game has changed dramatically in looks. Obviously if your comparing shots from 2008 Heavy Rain to 2006 Alan wake no wonder your thinking that LOL.

This is 2006 trailer.

This is 2008. Everything in this trailer is confirmed as gameplay engine. The only cgi that Remedy confirm used in this trailer is for the logos. Now I'm sorry but this is better on a whole than gameplay Heavy Rain at present.

EDIT: Those shots you post from Heavy Rain have not been shown as gameplay footage anywhere. There is no character or gameplay shown featuring those. Thats why I used only gameplay footage that has been shown.

@cura
Heavy Rain and Alan Wake are VERY close in terms of graphics. They're very good comparable.

And like selnor already said. Stop posting images from the engine in 2006. Everything is looking better the longer it's in developement. Just compare Killzone 2 video from E3 05 and today...

which screenshots were from 2006? The oldest one I think I used was Feb 2007 which is approx. 20 months old. 29 months is a bit of an exaggeration, and boy, lets hope for your sake it does look better otherwise you're going to have a hard time asserting that it is a contender for the best graphics of this generation.

If alan wake is indeed an open world then it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that it will end up looking worse than heavy rain but it obviously makes you feel better to to say that it will be a contender for the best graphics of this generation :) I can guarantee you that it won't.

The second Alan Wake picture you've posted is from October 2006:

over 26 months old.

This Heavy Rain/Alan Wake pissing match is pointless.

We haven't seen AW running in real time on the 360 yet, and we have almost no idea what differences there will be between the PC and 360 builds, besides the resolution. There could be lower res textures or weaker lighting for all we know.

Furthermore, even that one in-game PC screenshot of it has been downsampled, which removes jagged edges from it, and uses 4xMSAA (the 360 version will probably have less AA) to further smooth out the image.

Heavy Rain, however, has been seen in motion, being played on a PS3. Until the same can be said of Alan Wake, let's leave it, shall we?

I cannot believe you are still at it? I have posted the most up to date screens and most up to date gameply footage from the latest trailer and you still are saying "I hope for your sake that it is better". Do you have eyes. Watch the new trailer. I'll repeat again. Remedy have confirmed that NONE of the new trailer is CGI, it is ALL game footage aside from the logos.

I dont have to hope, it's in plain black and white that Alan Wake is kicking serious arse in the graphics department.

Also KUF2 is there as well. Another game which will be in with a very loud shout for graphics of 2009.

JEEZ.

So you havent read what the guy from remedy said then?????

The new trailer was entirely using the game engine. Entirely, completely, wait try this THE only part that was CGI or masked over or had non game engine effects were the logos. Is that clearer.

And for the record I wasnt trying to put Heavy Rain down. In fact look back through the thread. I said that my 3 fave graphics games in 2009 was Heavy Rain, Alan Wake and Kingdom Under Fire 2. Then Cura came in all like "Alan Wake is pathetic compared to Heavy Rain." Using and talking about graphics shown in 2006 of Alan Wake.

Also so you know Remedy have said the 360 version is looking the same albeit in 720p. Basically the PC version with lower res. Considering the 360 version has had 4 years dev time and M$ help, it will very likely push the 360 the furthest it's been yet. Well that and KUF2.

Selnor, dude, calm down. Methinks you're getting a little worked up. I'll go through your points one by one, as you seem to be a little confused by what I meant.

I never said otherwise. I just said that its been downsampled (rendered at one resolution and then shrunk down to a smaller one) which reduces aliasing.

This isn't an insult; all videogame screenshots go through this - Uncharted 2, Gears 2, MGS4, GT5. All their screenshots were downsampled too.

I never claimed you weren't impressed by Heavy Rain. In fact, I was well aware of the fact.

I've been keeping an eye on this game, because it interests me, so I'm almost certain they never said that. All they've said regarding the difference is that the 360 version is rendered at a lower resolution, they never claimed that there were identical in every other aspect.

Like I said, we don't know what the difference is, but I highly doubt it'll be as close to the PC version as you suspect. At the very, I imagine the PC version will boast better AA and lighting effects.

I dunno. Long development times don't always equal great graphics; see: Haze.

KUF2 looks very good too, but I'd be strangely dissapointed if a multiplat title turned out to be the best looking 360 game.

Hope that cleared things up. ^_^

imo Alan Wake will be the best looking console game of this year...

Imo , only Killzone 2 can be a challenger...

Sorry, I didnt mean to have a go. :)

I do agree the PC version will look better.

Regarding KUF2. No platforms besides PC have been confirmed. The fact that every single KUF game and it's spinoffs have all been exclusive to Xbox, makes it very plausible that it will be Xbox exclusive. But until it's announced we cant say it's exclusive to anyhing other than PC's. If I remember rightly KUF2 was announced as Next Gen platforms. Exactly the same as Alan Wake was first announced until M$ showed it at E3 as Windows and 360.

But regardless. Heavy Rain, KUF2 and Alan Wake are the games the impress me the most so far. :)
