I just was browsing on the site some Japan sales numbers and decided to post what i found interesting.

For 2008 alone:   Wii  -  PS3
+2 mln. sellers    1(0)   -  0(0)
+1 mln. sellers    3(0)   -  0(0)
+500k sellers      6(0)   -  1(1)
+300k sellers      7(0)   -  3(2)
+200k sellers     14(3)  -  8(6)
+100k sellers     22(9)  - 16(13)

*in brackets number of 3rd party games

Thnx to bigger install base, Wii has some million sellers in Japan, yet for lower sales numbers we get close enough numbers with having in mind install base difference. I think, PS3 did a GOOD job by selling games in Japan during 2008. =)

p.s. 3rd party game sales in Japan for 2008.

Games, which passed:

For 2008 alone:  Wii  -  PS3
+2 mln. sellers      0   -  0
+1 mln. sellers      0   -  0
+500k sellers        0   -  1
+300k sellers        0   -  2
+200k sellers        3  -   6
+100k sellers        9  -  13

PS3 is doing better, then Wii in terms of selling 3rd party games in Japan during 2008.

It shows you how badly third parties are struggling this generation.

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

It also shows how much games struggle to make it over 100k in Japan, when almost ever game that reaches US shores breaks 100k easilly.

I don't mean to sound like I'm bashing on anything but with the increase in cost of making games and those numbers still seeming low overall - I wonder how many of those games ended up making profit for their developers? Though I suppose it depends on if the games were also released overseas.

If Namco was right about development costs then practically none of the PS3 games made profit (off of Japan alone). Few of the Wii games look too costly, especially the ports...

Nintendo has 30 first party titles charted and 13 of them are over 100k in Japan for 2008.
Sony has 20 first party titles charted and 3 of them are over 100k in Japan for 2008.

interesting. we'll see how it turns out in 2009.

note: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is a Nintendo title in Japan? Always thought it's a Sega title.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Published by Sega in America and PAL, but by Nintendo in Japan. If we're talking in terms of publishers, it's a Nintendo title there.
