It was obviously tongue-in-cheek
The issue it raises, of course, isn't strictly true. Hardcore gamers will matter so long as they have money. Certainly publishers that target a small niche of gamers get by (Atlus comes to mind), certainly publishers will exist that will target the broader market of hardcore gamers as a group. The tide is simply switching to where the market will be focused on titles that can truly appeal to everyone. The Mario Kart sort of thing, while the core and casual fringes will both exist, and prosper

| Kantor said: Clearly, this was written by a casual. 1) Oh really? THAT's why SMG has over 7 million units sold... Wii Sports and Wii Play are both bundled. 2) And Prince of Persia is selling damned well, isn't it? And this is completely off topic. 3) Mirror's Edge sucked and Dead Space has sold pretty well. 4) What does this have to do with anything? 5) Now, which of the following has sold best: Monopoly video game, Wii Music, Shaun White Snowboarding, or Gears of War 2? 6) They don't sell millions with their names? That's a good thing. They sell millions because they make some of the best games in the industry. 7) That's always been true. The PS2 didn't survive on hardcore gamers alone... It's foolish to say that hardcore gamers don't matter. Are you telling me that if the PS3, with its $400 price tag, only had casual games, it would be selling this well? |
1. Wii Sports is not bundled in Japan and is bought by almost half of consumers there. SMG has been bought by one-sixth of Wii owners.
2. The latest Prince of Persia (1M combined on 360 and PS3) has been decried as being too easy by some critics because it uses a gimmick where the protagonist never seems to die but rather is saved by the female muse. That's why it is included.
3. Mirror's Edge has 0.75M and Dead Space 1.25M combined on 360 and PS3. These sales are somewhat low, especially considering all the good PR for Mirror's Edge.
4. The death of the US arcade industry is there to show that the fanatical group who kept those pladces open is not enough to maintain an industry. Those people are thought by many to be hardcore gamers.
5. Gears of War -- the original over 5M, the sequel over 3. But Wii Music is nearing 2M and outsold Gears 2 worldwide the week of Dec. 20 (353k to 318k). Also, there been 17 handheld and console versions of Monopoly -- going back to the NES. The PS version sold 1.49M just in Japan; the current Wii version has sold 0.32. Unforunately, there are not complete sales records for most versions of the game, so that question cannot be fully answered. (Shaun White is just over 1.25M for its three console versions combined).
6. The article cited -- and Grampy's post did not -- Psychonauts. This game was great and it was marketed by Majesco based upon Tim Schafer's reputation. It did not help. And Schafer's current game is in limbo (Brutal Legend) after the Activision-Blizzard merger.
7. Agreed. But many a PS3 fan in particular (and an Xbox 360 fan to a lesser extent) does not realize or acknowledge this.

I'm guessing the article is a joke, but I'm sure some people actually believe this.
GameDaily do realise they'd have no members if there were no casuals, right?
