The issue it raises, of course, isn't strictly true. Hardcore gamers will matter so long as they have money. Certainly publishers that target a small niche of gamers get by (Atlus comes to mind), certainly publishers will exist that will target the broader market of hardcore gamers as a group. The tide is simply switching to where the market will be focused on titles that can truly appeal to everyone. The Mario Kart sort of thing, while the core and casual fringes will both exist, and prosper
