I think One touch KO is spot on here. The only bundled games that boost the console sales, are games that do something new and are meaningful in the sense. Of course, offering a bundle that is sold cheaper than the console and the game sold separately offers the same as sold at cheaper price, which is meaningful when you are competing with price.
As stated in the OP, NES with SMB and Wii with Wii Sports were huge successes, while GC with SMS/MP/MKDD/RE4 bundles, N64 with SM64 bundle, SNES with SM All Stars/SMW bundles weren't (although, SNES did beat the competition, but it was the most popular console regionally only in the Americas). Gameboy with Tetris also had a huge success and DS has had various bundles, but then again, DS has a number of "meaningful" games.
@Pete Beast: M$ will enter the motion controls. You said the reason yourself; they are in the business to make money. Looking at the sales numbers, the market has ditched the pad controls for motion controls and a sure reason to lose market and your money would be to stick to a product what the market doesn't want. Besides, M$ already is doing their tests with motion controls. The Lips mics has motion sensors in them (kind of like a Singstar and Boogie mix).
