Yes I know what I am talking about.  try it yourself ask a gamer in your neighbourhood to name three decent games on Saturn and they will struggle to name them.

Just because gamers in my neighbourhood are uninformed doens't mean the console didn't have kickass games. The system didn't sell and sega didn't have lots of advertising behind it so word never got out... but people with saturns know that we really didn't have it bad at all until late 1997 when sega started shifting to dreamcast.

The kids in my neighborhood are too young and wouldn't even know what a Saturn is.

The PS3 still has too much up its sleeve to be completely ignored and forgotten...the 360 may be tearing it a new one right now, but soon they will be back neck and neck...

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

And where did I say the Saturn had no kickass games? People who were not born yet when Genesis released and never saw the advertising and never owned one have even an easier time to name 5 decent games on the Genesis than name 3 decent games on the newer Sega saturn system.

PS3 is this gens Sega Saturn?

I don't recall the Sega Saturn coming from 2 consoles which completely dominated the console market and even the games are not comparable. The PS3 is the PS3, it does not compare to any past console. It came and remains at a high price and is outsold by a phenomenon and another console because that one is cheap.

Even if the PS3 only does 10 million for the next 3 years (don't kid yourselves thinking that wont happen at worst) that is 50 million, which past 3rd place console came third?

OT but one statement I heard was that the PS3 has lost more money then the PS3 made. What amount is that and who was it that said that? I have a very hard time stomaching that until I see some figures.

disagree.. the dreamcast was a pioneer console that introduced a lot of functions into console

-online play:broadband
-microphones
-first 3D console to have motion control games
-cheap price

sega was sadly well into the hole when it launched the DC.It probably would have sold 20 million units if sega continued to sell it for another 3 years. But I guess that wasnt to be.

The ps3 is a powerful console but doesnt bring much onto the table that hasnt already been seen in terms of innovation. Plus the DC had a killer price- $199

To a lot of people who grew up around the DC launch time, the DC was seen as a powerful, innovative console ahead of its time- and it wasnt only about the graphics. DC will always be a classic cult console.

Yup the ps3 is about 500 k units ahead of the DC in japan with aligned launches.. oh and btw the DC was considered a huge FLOP in japan. It gets worse when you compare it to PS2 sales.

Nintendo did that years prior to the Dreamcast.

I'd compare the PS3 to the N64 if anything. I believe it'll come in second.

But, man, I don't even remember the Dreamcast even exisiting. I went straight from N64 to GCN and never looked back.

Don't think so, it sells much better than all the failed systems. And the damn thing is still at 400$. Unless Sony really kills it (for example by keeping their "value-added" strategy till 2010) it will be quite successful unlike Dreamcast, XBOX or Gamecube. Not PS1 or PS2 successful obviously.

Steroid - Last I checked, one of the PS360 consoles has made about a billion dollars in the past year, and the other has lost a billion :-p

Wouldn't the XBOX be the Saturn then?

Didn't they lose like five billion on that?  And it was technically advaced too.

>_>

Yeah...except sega didn't have that kind of money to lose.

In years in which sega did the Saturn's R&D and sold it to the public...Segas financial statements looked like this.

1993 - 230 million profit
1994 - 165 million profit
1995 - 110 million profit
1996 - 46 million profit
1997 - 360 million loss

1998 - discontinue Saturn

Both Sony and MS would be considered morons of gaming if they didn't have money to burn. Sega didn't have that luxury. Had sega made the PS3 and released it with so many mistakes as Sony did, they would have already stopped its production.

I'd say the PS3 has more similarities to the Saturn than to the Dreamcast, right down to the developer complaints about how the system's so hard to develop for (and even for many of the same reasons).

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
