Well I don't agree witj the majority of the comments here. 1st I want to say that I am a HUGE fan of MarioKart, played them all & as far as home console is concerned the best game in the series is the original MarioKart for the Super Famicom & I mean WAY better, to date none has matched the Battle Mode wich is the most frantic thing in the original, tracks were more challenging too!
For me the order is: SMK > DD/N64 > Wii
As I stated before, none comes close to Super MarioKart, the N64 version was a letdown gameplay-wise, controls were imprecise, but it had a decent battle mode & 2 good arenas.
Double Dash was a great step in the right direction concerning the GP mode, great tracks, awsome gameplay (I'm still not a fan of the slide power-up system but here it was better implemented than in the N64 version), I liked the tandem stuff, the main rpoblem for me was the battle mode, while some modes were interesting, the arenas were dreadfull :(!!! That is why I put DD & N64 on the same level, DD great for GP mode & gameplay but unplayable in battle mode, wich is a huge aspect of MarioKart for me, the N64 had good battlemode so despite the gameplay issues, it deserves the tie with DD on that aspect alone.
The rubber-band aid concerning the items is quite a issue, item getting unbalances too much the game...
The Wii version, well it could easily have become the best ever, Nintendo even "listened" to me & put Battle Mode 4 back (oceans filled with tears of joy!!!!) but ruined it even badly than the DD, that teamplay crap was a blue shell in both feet!!! Who wants to play MarioKart Battle with bots???????
I should be able to chose the number of players & the game mode, DeathMatch being a must. It's even more frustrating since the arenas are awsome :'( ...
Gameplay-wise I find it not as good as DD, Nintendo wanted to make it easier, the result is it feels a bit numb, the bikes don't belong here, it's Mario-KART, not MarioBike & since they go faster than the Karts, in GP mode the game has crearly become MarioBike :'(
The rubber-band aid is even worse than on DD, the items are unbalanced as ever... Shame decause the tracks are great, the classic ones like in the DS version are an awsome addition, add the on-line & it could easily have been the reatest MarioKarts of all times. The loss of GP multiplayer doesn't help either.
My opinion is one of a long time MarioKart fan, Super MarioKart is my favorite game of all times, just that! I understand that people not familiar as I am with the series won't have the same perspective & can enjoy the game greatly, for me though, it's a great stepback, sadly because there were great ideas behind it, but a few fatal errors killed the game...
