Are you kidding me? I mean were talking what 3-4 years from now and they still won't be able to put out a console that can display 1080i/p resolution? How lazy are they? Would be unacceptable in my book

You do realise that this is just a hypothetical question?

Yea i realize its a hypothetical question, i'm just blown away at the suggestion of it even happening. It's like saying what if MS stuck with DVD technology as its media storage format for its next system in 3 years?

I've had a 1080p 57 inch for over 2 years now, i know thats not the norm but more and more people are getting high def tv's, how hard is it to put an output resolution into a machine of 1080i/p and not just 720p?

Which looks better Quake 3 Arena @1080p or Call of Duty 4 @720p?

When you're trying to produce a videogame console one of the most important things for its success (and your company's success) is to keep the research and development costs (and manufacturing costs) to a reasonable level. Being that the difference in visual quality between 720p and 1080p is very minor it is one of the places that it makes the most sense to cut in order to keep costs at a reasonable level.

You do realise Nintendo made the Wii 480p by choice not because they weren't able to produce a more capable machine as you put it. This along with Vagabond's point about 1080p only being of significant importance on very large TV's and i can see Nintendo making the same choice again. Looking at the market, seeing what the adoption rate of large (i.e. above 40 inch) TV's is and perhaps deciding that 720p is enough.

I do know that Nintendo choose the performance level of the Wii, but my point was that Nintendo's next generation console will have its performance level was determined based on a cost-benefit analysis of some kind ... Which is (essentially) what you're saying

What percentage of 360/PS3 games actually run at 1080p??

720p would be more then enough for the Wii 2

Most PS3/360 games don't even run at at 720p without upscaling! Resolution is really over-rated. Frame-rate is much more important

Native 720p at 60 fps would be great for the next-gen. My TV doesn't go higher than 720p anyway.

You're completely wrong, 720p is the rule and anything above or below that would be the exceptions.

OK I admit it's been a while since I looked at the native resolutions list so I had forgotten a lot about it. Part of it is also that I fell prey to the fact that the most publicized resolutions are the ones which fall short of 720p.

However, my comment about frame-rates still applies. I would actually prefer worse resolution with better and more stable framerate on my 360 games.

I'm actually in agreement with you and was referring more to the Nabraham's post, hence the bolded font but i felt the following posts all pertained to the same train of thought and quoted them.  Sorry for the confusion;)

2160p is in development so...I'm not sure how well 720P will be received in the coming years.

Lol.... I hop you realise the difference between 1080p and 2160p is unnoticable unless you have a stupidly huge 80+ inch Television.

an 80 inch TV would be as wide as I am tall.

The same can be argued with PC screens and the difference between 720p and 1080p. Its very noticeable on a 24'' monitor.

Plus, 65'' TVs are now affordable. Sharp has one on amazon.com right now for under $3,000. At that size 2160p would be noticeable.

Wait wat?

Either you are single with no one to be responsible for except yourself, you have no understanding of how much money that is, and/or you are crazy rich....

Not that many people can pay that much money these days....especially for tv's....

Explanation of sig:

I am a Pakistani.....my name is Dan....how hard is that? (Don't ask about the 101...apparantely there are more of me out there....)

Ha. Nice to see alot of people agree. Also Id didnt say but I also think that 720p is the hot spot for Wii 2.

That's not a ton of money to save, problem is most people suck with saving money these days. Budget some money aside each month and get one down the road. You can get a 1080p DLP tv over 60 inches for under $2,000 now.

Had to change my sig to get some moderator to quit bitching about it......

Just wanted to post. I usually start threads but hardly post on them. Ive got nothing to add most people already made better examples then I couldve.

If people only own a Wii and an SDTV then get an HDTV in these next 4 years buy Wii 2 they'll be extremly satisfied still with their graphics. No real need for 1080p still!

I dont see how much higher PS4 or Xbox720 can advance without again costing a fortune either.

^^And you think when they release these brand spanking new 2160p, 60 inch TV's they are going to charge the same price as the current cheapest 60 inch TV's. I think history would like a word with you.

Unless you're going for screens bigger than 42, 720p looks gorgeous.
