@bdbd The only thing is Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and Mario Kart Wii aren't superior games to what is available on the 360 and PS3.  Otherwise they would have much higher scores than they do at Game Rankings.

@DrJay, These games might provide better entertainment for some people.  But, I don't think you get the same social interaction playing Wii Bowling at home that you get in playing at a Bowling Alley.  Also, you don't get the same satisfaction as knowing you're strong enough to pick up a real bowling ball and and in knocking down real pins.

Wii Sports, Wii Fit & Mario Kart ARE superior to MORE people than what is available on the 360 and PS3. Gamerankings is just a collective of hardcore game reviewers who just don't get it. People power determines what is popular, not critics.

As for your bowling analogy... don't you think you'd get more satisfaction buying a gun and going on a shooting rampage than playing GTA4? Shouldn't you try to play in a local league of soccer than buy FIFA or PES? How about the satisfaction of driving your car down the highway at over 100mph rather than Forza or Gran Tourismo?

You can't be serious, but I'm sure you are.

Well, if the economy continues to worsens.  .   .  . And, I have driven a Chevy Cavalier up a curvy mountain rode at over 100 mph while under the influence of adult beverages.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

NES, SNES, PS1, PS2 all have a 10 year lifespan. Wii will also have a 10 year lifespan. PS3 could also have a 10 year lifespan if they change strategy.

Which of those consoles were/are outselling the competition in it's twilight years? None of them. The only thing they do is keep ticking over but the console manufacturer must release a new console before the current one is discontinued.

Well, the Wii sure sells a lot of consoles. No one really knows why. It has had very little to with the quality of its software so far because looking at the places that are supposed to be the best judges of such things, the Wii's software library aside from four or five games hasn't been that impressive and it certainly hasn't been any more impressive than either the PS3 or 360's library in any way. It doesn't have to do with price either because the Wii isn't the most inexpensive console on the market and it does sell well at an even higher price on ebay.

I don't know why casual games sell as well as they do. It strikes me if people wanted to bowl or play ping pong, then they would go to a bowling alley or find a real ball and ping pong table.

Hopefully something will come along to change the situation or when for some reason the situation changes to where the consoles and games that actually deserve to do well will do well, but if that doesn't happen, then it doesn't happen. Not much can be done about it. Heck, maybe one of these days Nintendo will come out with a quality console and / or quality games like they had in the SNES era, so it might not even be that much of a big deal.

Or maybe, just maybe, we're not 40 million retards and Nintendo has come out with a quality console that puts control and gameplay above pixel count and gives a lot better experience than playing the same old uber-violent game in it's umteenth reincarnation whose tired old story line hasn't really changes since the SNES as have not it's same fumble fisted archaec hand controller - both of which we are not supposed to notice because we are dazzled by the pretty pictures.

And by the way, the places that are supposed to be the best judge of the quality of the games are your own brain. The reviewers will always like the types of games that made them succesful enough gamers to get a reviewing gig.

And yes I play some casual games including Wii sports and I enjoy them. Yes I could drive 30 minutes to a real bowling alley but since I use it as a 10 minute muscle stretcher, that would be self defeating. Of course,  those used to years of gaming sitting on their ass on the couch might fail to see this. Also I suspect that if i tried racing a giant Ape aound inside a shopping mall on motorcycles, the manager would probably get all pissy or something.

First paragraph:  I don't think the storylines are tired and old.  GTA IV for instance has a great story and great music.  Cry by 10CC, The Stooges, Smashing Pumpkins, Fleetwood Mac, The Sisters of Mercy, Ace Frehley with "Back in the New York Groove", the Allman Brothers, "Shikki Shikki" all adds up to a terrific soundtrack even though many people that must not be able to tell good music from bad try to say that it doesn't.  And I guess I'll have to try to play a thirty to fifty hour action adventure game or rpg game on a Wii to know if the controls are really that much more comfortable than gamepads for that purpose.  You indicate in your post that you play Wii most often as a muscle stretcher for about ten minutes at a time but that is quite a bit different in duration from trying to play an FF, GTA, MGS, or even Zelda game to completion on it.

Second paragraph:  Not really.  I don't want to walk in Game Stop buy a $50.00 to $60.00 game just because it is sitting on the shelf, then get it home, open it up, put it in the console, have my own brain tell me that I've wasted my money, and then try to take it back and have Game Stop say, "Oh, sorry, we can't take it back because you've played it."  This isn't the early eighties and the purpose of review scores is to let you know which games are worth spending your money on and which games out of similar games deserve your money the most.

@BTFeather: No they are superior games. If they weren't, i would like PS360 games more.

The thing is, that the only way to measure whether a game is superior to another game is the games appeal. And the only way to measure the appeal is to judge it by sales. There's also the thing called "accessibility". I would guess that Master of Orion 3 would be somewhat the "ultimate" TBS on paper, but it's somewhat the shittiest TBS ever. And why is that? All the accessibility have been killed with the amount of micromanagement. It may be a fun game for the first ten rounds the first time you play it, but after that it sucks hard.

In the end, subjective opinions don't mean a shit, which of course includes the reviewers too, when we compare it to public opinion. As i said earlier, your opinion is irrelevant when the public opinion is the one who makes the judgement. Your opininion is relevant only when you make a decision to purchase a game/console for yourself.

You contradict your first sentence with the first sentence of your third paragraph.

Dont listen to some of these guys. I agree with you ^^

It is the perfect plan though. Sony can loose this gen(not to say they will. But when the next gen rolls in they will still have the PS3 sitting there, with 60million plus userbase already. When a switch happens with the XBOX720 and WiiHD the PS3 will be comparable or even still better and with greater marketshare then both. That means that it would make more sense to developers to develop for the PS3 still. There would be NO way the competition will ever be able to recoup a 60million lead, and thats assuming that the PS3 might not come 1st THIS gen.

Regardless, the PS3 is the system of the Future. Some are just in denial.

@BTFeather: Yes, that was the whole idea. I said the same thing as you did with the post i wrote my reply to; we both cherrypicked a fragment of the market as a proof of own opinion being right. It's no different from saying that Ferrari Enzo is a better car than Toyota Hiace.

I think the OP is pretty much on the money with a few corrections needed.  The PS3 will be more powerful than the Wii Hd and possibly less expensive at the Wii HD's launch in 2010 with the PS3  giving gamers more of the games that they really want at that time and more functionality as well.  And the PS3 will be significantly cheaper than the Nextbox which will probably be coming out in November 2010 and will be home to most of MS's next line of exclusives while the 360 will mainly be relegated to an original xbox status following the release of the 360 ie. it will mainly be notable for third party shooters, sports games, and the like which will be better on the Nextbox but at a much higher price than what the PS3 will be at at that time.  So without the big games technologically advanced games coming to the Wii HD and the lack of exclusives coming to the 360 after the launch of the Nextbox, Sony will definitely be gaining in marketshare as they pave the way for the PS4 which will launch Holiday 2012.

The ones i have bolded makes this soo wronge, not to mention the rest of your paragraphs.  There is no logic in what you wrote.  I suggest taking a step back and think about technology progression and how the ps3 would be in a corner in the event wii HD and the next xbox console comes out.  Think logically not fanatacilly.

If people here thought logically, about 80% of the threads and posts would disappear. Surely, you come here for entertainment and not logic. For the most part, you're basically dealing with Junior High/High School kids who have the world figured out already thus what sort of logic can you really expect?
