Forums - Nintendo - The Nintendo Wii should just leave the console race 'Hear me out please'

Historically, the industry shows some pretty consistent trends. There's generally an antimainstream period of about 10 years (the pre-arcade days, end years of the Atari 2600, the PS1 and PS2 generations), and 10 years of mainstream interest (arcades, NES, Wii). The cycle, if not properly restarted, leads to an industry failure about 5 years out from when the cycle hits the end of a 20-year loop (though funnily enough, the industry is only ever threatened with a crash during an antimainstream portion of the cycle).

The industry can be rebooted at any time with a disruptive product which draws mainstream attention back to it, of course, and that's what Nintendo did in 1985 and 2006. Following the cyclical trends, we should see the antimainstream side of the cycle emerge in about 2016 (1995 was the definitive shifting point last time, with the PS1), and a need for a full industry reboot around 2026 or so (give or take a few years), with an almost inevitable industry crash by 2031 if no successful disruption occurs.

Thats interesting. I was thinking about the 10 yr PS / NES,SNES sales periods being even. Ofcourse its way to young an industry to make these assumptions isnt it. Are there comparable industries/technologies?

Yeah, there are.  I haven't done much research on them (yet, anyway), but you should be able to find similar X-year trends in other sectors of the entertainment industry.  1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 year cycles seem to pop up a lot in human behavior in general, so it's hardly shocking that cycles of similar length pop up elsewhere.  You can even see cycles of those particular increments in this industry (yearly sales trends, bi-yearly periods of release ups and downs, 5-year intervals between generations, 10-year intervals between shifts in industry focus, 20-year intervals between industry reboots...).

Although you do have to be careful.  It's very, very easy to see patterns where there aren't patterns, or to see a pattern which isn't really a pattern at all when you look at the bigger picture.  What we want to see has an immense impact on what we actually see.

Just to make it clear this is not trolling i dont want to get banned

The Nintendo Wii has been selling extremely well and has made Nintendo a fortune. But their outstanding sales is hurting the ps3 and Xbox 360, its consistently outseling both consoles by a huge margin. The competition is not even close, they are embarassing the 'The HD consoles'.

At the end of the day the console race is between the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, the nintendo wii is never taken into consideration. The best analogy to use would be - if there was a boxing match the main show would be the two boxers aka ps3 vs Xbox 360. The referee is always present in the fight but its not main show, its not the main attraction aka the Nintendo Wii.

Nintendo wii should just leave the console race and let the 2 boxers fight.

Please understand this thread is not trolling I have supplied fair and balanced journalism, thank you in advance to the VGchartz comunnity.

Please discuss

Haven't read the whole looong thread so sorry if somebody already made the analogy but:

Muhammed Ali wasn't a referee, as much as the other boxers might have wished him to be.

edit: read it now and Grampy totally owns Megaman2 and his thread.

SO... You want Nintendo to leave... Because they are embarrassing the HD consoles? Well, there's a gap in your logic because if the wii leaves, there will still be one console that is embarrassed, and I can guarantee you it will be the ps3. If only because of the price.
So.. I fail to even remotely see a point.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Just watch you don't get banned for saying something like this. He did deserve it but you don't go round gloating about it.

I don't understand your logic... The Wii should leave the race because it is doing exceedingly well? According to your logic the PS2 should have left the 6th gen race and let the Gamecube and Xbox fight, and why would Sony do that?

I'm detecting a hint of Bias in the OP

4 ≈ One

If you really think about it the wii is the only console thats keeping a part of the industry alive since most of these HD games dont sell like nitnendos games they're not making much of a profit. This where some gamers dont understand.

The industry could hit a snag if they're not making much profit, this is why the japan market is dwindling and because of that nintendo decided to take matters to their own hands by doing what they have been doing 20 years ago. yes the gamer community had grownup but some of these gamers probably dont have much time due to jobs and families.

so by making games for the famly and kids (which we once were) they are going to bring a new generation of gamers that will lilke these hardcore franchises. I know what you are about to say and yes the wii sales ratio is not that great compare to the other two but thats because dev think they can just make a game for nitnendo with little effort and expect it to sell thats bullshit.
