Forums - Sony - Let's Talk: Will 2009 be sonys year?

So, I've been thinking and realized "OMG wow sony has a strong chance" reasons

1. Many devs are either increasing support or returning to the psp.

2. At some point they will be selling the ps3 for a profit, say hello to advertisments then.

3. HUGE linup. Uncharted 2, god of war 3, gran turismo 5, killzone 2, infamous, white knight chronicles, ratchet and clank future series, the list goes on.

4. Nintendo doesn't have any big releases that we know of. Microsoft has some

5. Ready at dawn studios might just make their own ip for the psp rather then using other titles. Everything they have made is/was genious

what do u think?

From the perspective of sales for the PS3, I hope beyond everything else that GT5 is the system seller everyone says it is.

In any case Microsoft are not going to make it easy for Sony next year. The big thing is Forza 3, because every dollar Sony spends in advertising GT5 they'll probably spend one too if not more to try and upstage Sony's big release.

Tease.

The argument has not changed one bit from 2006. Critical mass for a consoles success starts with the $250 USD price point. The Playstation 3 is not $250, and will not be in 2009. Even if Sony cuts the console $100 (25%) it'll STILL be $300!

This isn't to say that a AAA 1st party release can't/won't provide a short-term bump of 40,000 units here or 50,000 units there for a week, but Microsoft can match anything Sony wants to throw out there, and at this point they can keep the 360 at half the PS3s price until this generation is over. Think about that: When the PS3 is finally $250 in mid/late 2010, the 360 Arcade will be $129 or less.

Sony is a deeply troubled company with no vision or direction, and that statement does not apply just to their gaming division. Unless Sony has a new Ericsson/PSP hybrid phone to compete with Apple and is planing dirt cheap OLED TVs, no, 2009 will not be Sony's year. 2010 won't be either.

I don't think they've even hit bottom yet. Give this current economy a full year, not just a single quarter. 2009 is going to be very, very bad for Sony. Hopefully, this downturn sparks fundamental changes that Sony has needed to occur for the past ten years when the company has been run poorly. I LOVE my PS3, but the system has flaws. I think, like Nintendo in years past, Sony needs to get humbled this gen.

Even after they said they'd never make a PSP(1) game again?

Yeah, they seem to be reneging on that.

Nope.  They sent all of their PSP development kits back to Sony.  They're moving to more profitable platforms.

Yeah, I guess so. It looks like the rumor that Ready at Dawn were reconsidering PSP development began (as usual) with an off-the-cuff remark that's been blown way out of proportion.

if ur talking about better HW sales than previous years than yes
if ur talking about good sw lineup yes
if ur talking about outselling 360 ww in 09 than yes
if ur talking about outselling the wii im sad to say no

You need to clearly define what you mean by "Sony's year". If you are talking about game line-up, then it's looking like 09 will be theirs just like 08.

This is the answer. Sony CANNOT match the price MS can drop their price to. s--t i hate anti competitive low ball pricing mutha fubars. Put small business owners out of business because they can charge much less than the average price. This is exactly what MS will do.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Microsoft isn't lowballing.  They're probably going to post another profitable year for the 360 which means they're not lowering the price artificially.  If anything, Sony is since they're losing money.

$199/$299 is not a low price for a console into its 4th year.  The PS2 hit that price point a lot earlier.  How is Microsoft being unreasonable here?  What we're really seeing here is that the consoles have not dropped in price as they should have.

I like the competition.  It makes console gaming cheaper for everyone.

what do u think?

(1) More devs are abandoning the PSP, including some of the most successful ones.  Like God of War for PSP?  Dev left the PSP.

(2) After this most recent cost reduction, they're about $100 away from selling the PS3 for a profit.  Cost reduction will get harder from this point forward, of course, and it is unlikely they will get to a profit on a per-system-sold basis in 2009.

(3) Your "huge" lineup consists of games that may or may not come out in 2009 (GoW 3, GT 5), games that haven't exactly received critical acclaim (White Knight Chronicals), and another Uncharted and another Ratchet & Clank.  Those games didn't change the PS3's fortunes, so why would their sequels?

(4) Nintendo always hides their big releases.

(5) Ready at Dawn doesn't work with the PSP anymore.  They jokingly stated that maybe they should reconsider it, but they were kidding.  They literally said that they should reconsider it because they were good at it.  But they're moving to more profitable platforms (like the DS).

Can I get a link confirming them moving on to platforms like the DS?

Or is that just speculation on your part?

From an interview with Edge in 2008.

"We have no plans to develop games on the DS at the moment,” he added. “As always, we never say never, but we’d have to have something that’s a good fit for the platform and our ideas right now aren’t really achievable on the DS."

As far as I know they've announced no new platforms, and the platforms they're working on is a secret at the moment.

Now for some speculation on my part.

"We’ve got the third version of the Ready at Dawn Engine running on both the PS3 and the 360" and "I’m also excited about online distribution on both these platforms because that’s how I like to get all my media now."

One of their projects is going to be a downloadable game for PSN, XBLA.

Its not fair when one company deliberatly prices their product cheaper with the aim of eliminating their competition bcoz they cant price that product at the same price. Its anti competitive and there should be laws against it unless your happy shopping at starbucks, mcdonalds, wallmart and target for the rest of your life.

I like netscape, MS used this same tactic.

Yeah, it's from what they said at their site:

"According to Gamasutra, 2 out of 5 top PSP games sold on Amazon in the US last week were Ready At Dawn games with Daxter and Chains of Olympus both making the top 5.

Maybe we should reconsider this whole ‘no more PSP games’ thing because we seem to be pretty good at it "

It's pretty obvious that they are just saying it jokingly.
