I think it's interesting that Madden 08 on the Wii doubled it sales after the given week we're looking at (about week 19 or), or increased its sales by 100%, while the PS3 and 360 versions only increased their sales by about 30% each. Of course for the 360 version, it's much harder to increase the sales by much when you sell so much in the first few weeks. Madden 08 Wii is only 100k from a million, and it managed to sell 19k last week (the week before Christmas this year)... I mean, come on people! Buy 09! JEEZ.
But 09 is a million seller for sure. It'll take practically all year next year to do so, but hey. A million is a million is a million. Course, when did 500k become bad?
And please don't give me that "Well the PS3 and 360 versions sell SOOO much better than it, why even bother." I'll tell you why to bother - competition. Especially since the Wii has the largest user base. Someone comes a long (2KSports?) and makes a decent football game, and there's no other game to compete against it, all of the sudden, 2KSports has a "monopoly" on a sports game on the Wii. Given enough time, and it may compete with EAs sports games on all consoles... EA wouldn't want that. Since Madden is a bigger name than any other football series (and the only one with NFL License), it will crush the competition unless the competition can come up with something so much better... way harder than just releasing a decent football game on a console that has no football game at all (though of course the Wii does have Madden, so the point is mute).
Also, since the expense of Madden Wii is all included in the other versions (you don't need to recreate stats for each version, and the code that holds and works those stats is probably similar), 500k is probably a nice bonus, and since it's going to reach a million eventually, that'll just be great.
Note that this also works for such games like COD. Just because COD Wii won't sell as much as the other versions, doesn't mean it's not worth making. For one, COD is now the biggest non-exclusive FPS game on consoles, so keeping it that way on ALL consoles is important. Not just for this generation, but for the next. And two, it still makes a good bit of money.
Remember folks, longterm strategy. Short sightedness killed Sony this generation, Nintendo the 5th generation, started WWII, destroyed our economy, wrecked your car (when you couldn't see that tree approaching), and sunk the Titanic. Short sightedness: Don't let it happen to you.
