Forums - Microsoft - Is Fable II really an RPG?

A role playing game doesn't HAVE To have stats. It's about the decisions made and so long as you can make choices and experience their consequences to a reasonable degree, it's an RPG by roughdescription. It's hardly the BEST RPG, but it's more so than a lot of JRPGS where it's more of an interactive story.

360 IS OPERATIONAL AFTER 37 DAYS!

Typically, gameplay centers around one or more avatars, with quantized characteristics that evolve over the course of the game, and take the place of the gamer's own skill in determining the outcome of the actions taken by the player. These attributes are traditionally displayed to the player on a status screen as a numeric value, instead of a simpler abstract graphical representation, such as the bars and meters often favored by video games in general. Another common element in RPGs is a well-developed fictional setting.

That is the definition of a RPG. People will argue one way or another, but they are all wrong. People think Zelda is a RPG, it's a action adventure with RPG elements. Most games now a days have RPG elements, basically if you can't understand the definition posted it means "If a level system exists which is crucial towards game play, and your decision influences the characters in any way it is an RPG".

There is so many sub-genres of RPGs it's ridiculous now. Take Folklore, it's an action adventure RPG. Why is Zelda only action adventure when folklore is an action adventure RPG? Because folklore has a leveling system, sure it's leveling system isn't that crucial but it has one. COD4 can be seen to have RPG elements because you can build a character online. God of War has RPG elements because you can upgrade weapons and unlike other games choose which to, to determine how you play. Even zelda, which is widely argued to be a RPG is not, but it has RPG elements, such as you determine how the character progressed, level up the health, the weaponry, etc.

Fable II however is NOT just a RPG. People who say it is, are morons. A RPG was first based off a game emulating the table top RPGs, such as dungeons and dragons. In that respect, Fable II is an action adventure RPG, because of the combat. Turn-based I hate to say it is still the closest thing you can classify as just a RPG. Not to say fable 2 isn't an RPG, it's just a sub-genre.

Today there is so many, FPS-RPG, Action-RPG, Action Adventure-RPG, RTS-RPG, RPG(See turn based and classic) etc etc.

Examples.
FPS-RPG - Resistance 2, online co-op.
Action RPG - Phantasy Star, Star Ocean(maybe)
Action Adventure RPG - Folklore, Fable 2

If Fallout 3 and Mass Effect are RPG's and not Shooters.... then yes. Fable 2 is a RPG

4 ≈ One

Fable II is many genre's, RPG, Management Simulation, Action Adventure.

Same reason X-Play gave it GOTY; Because it was more than the sum of its parts.

I never got why people say Fallout 3 is a shooter. Are they not using the VATS system? I can't even begin to use the manual system to shoot enemies with. VATS is just so much smoother.

Regarding the topic at large, isn't a leveling system a necessity in being an RPG? What other RPGs haven't had a leveling up system/stat building system?

@DGC
Fallout3 and ME have leveling systems to my knowledge. If Fable 2 has no such system, it is questionable whether or not the game is an RPG. You can talk about the ability to make choices that affect your environment, but to a lesser degree I can do that in Prince of Persia, or the Sims, and neither of these is called an RPG.

I can't think of any game I would readily and easily defnie as an RPG that did not contain some kind of leveling system.

This is Wiiforever and since you apparently know your stuff about IP addresses, you should be able to figure out I am not coming from a proxy and that I am using a Static IP. Also, if you take further note, my static IP is different now. That is because I can change it from my router. So have fun blocking each new IP I get. Just now that there are billions of combinations I can use :))))))))))))))))))

So in other words, PLEASE IP BAN ME NOW. I Gurantee I will be able to private message you again today with my third new IP in the last 2 days.

Oo and b4 I forget, happy new year!

An rpg is a game where you are in the role of a character and have some freedom in choosing how that character turns out. FFVII is *less* of an rpg than fable II, its just that we're all used to leveling people up to 99 and seeing attack and defense and max hp go up.
