Laughing My Funny Ass OFF.

You do realize the age rate for most of them has increased to 18 to some what EARLY 20's.

There hasnt been a 15 to 16 year old lead character in a JRPG in a long while.

For great example the lead in White Knight is 18 while the princesess is like 20.

And From Star Ocean 4 Mavrick is 21 while the girl is 18.

So...Its not that bad anymore, atleast now there just young adults. :P

Well, since your profile says your 18 I guess you won't get my point. But you will in ten years.

Lol, yeah im 18, but im not age bias, im just saying the leads for upcoming HD console games are in there early 20's or late teens meaning 18 to 19.

Pretty much though you gotta admit its better then a buncha 15 years olds with big keys and big shoes running around killing things. *cough* ....

You must not like Kingdom Hearts lol.

I got into JRPGs with the ps1. I'm 21 now and would prefer  young adult protagonists in my JRPGs but I do understand his point about going from weak to strong though. However, I think it could also be applied to young adults if not as dramatic like say Squalls maturing in ffviii

Lol, no that was the fastest example that just came to mind lol.

And agreed @ you're post. :P Squall is a real good example.

This is how we solve the problem:

In WRPGs you can create and modify your characters age and appearance (which is a really good thing!)

There you go.

how does that solve anything wrong with JRPGs?

 lol, true. :D

But at least we would get the opportunity to play with believable, mature realistic characters. Not manga/anime figures with big eyes and silly hair.

What's wrong with the teenage characters?  They're not believeable?  What is considered a believeable, mature realistic character?

I think it's annoying because they're so cookie cutter, although like someone else said in this thread (I believe), this isn't really the problem itself but rather a symptom of overall stagnation of the genre. After all, these sorts of characters work great in games like Persona or TWEWY because they fit there. In fact, it wouldn't really make sense to play any other kind of character in those games (even if playing an elderly janitor in Persona would be funny).

even though characters like Squall/Cloud/Tidus were all 17/18, to me they always seemed older

Cloud's 21 in FFVII, not 17/18

^Teenagers with big eyes, their personality, the voice acting, predictable cut scenes, silly hair etc.. etc..

I read from your profile that you're 15 years old and naturally you're ok with the teenage manga/anime style.
As you get older (into your 20s something).. Well let's just say that many of us experienced western gamers who have played videogames and PC games since the 80s are fed up and tired of the "new" 3D jrpgs.
2D jrpgs had some charm to them (Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy I-V, Dragon Warrior etc.)
The character gfx were of a "poor quality" compared to the 3D manga/anime characters these days, but still good and it was easy to immerse yourself in the bad gfx. Most 3D jrpg characters are "meh". Playing "modern" jrpgs feels outright tacky. Millions of Europeans and Americans support my notion. That's why japanese developers are looking into changing game design and character design.

Word.

Who else is a teenger? I don't think Fei Fong Wong was that age, I'm pretty sure Claude was
