Are you freaking serious?
Those kind of WRPG have absolute shit for storylines. I seriously hope they don't do that. |
Planescape: Torment - best story ever
Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer - best story of 2007
Fallout 1/2 - Sublime writing, characters and setting
It's funny how all the best RPG stories belong to WRPGs.

It is funny how xenophobic that statement is. Emerald Dragon, Lunar, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, XenoGears / Saga and several of the FF's all have better stories than Planescape: Torment.
Also, I hope they don't stop development of all save the word type stories. I enjoy games and stories that have such epic scopes. Of course, not every game should be like that but when I play a Final Fantasy I like to think it could be the Final Fantasy. I enjoy eschatological narratives where it seems like the characters are in do or die situations.
Of course this line of thought -- saying there should be less end of the world type narratives could be applied to all fantasy fiction which seems to be dominated by these types of stories. When you go in Barnes and Nobles and look at fantasy fiction it is a large chunk of what you find. Maybe there is a bit of overkill with it; yet, without the best of these types of stories The Lord of the Rings, The Cthulhu Mythos fantasy fiction would be a much less interesting genre of storytelling.
