Forums - Sales - Are used games killing the market?

Funny that someone said it'd hurt the HD consoles, as for me I think it'll hurt the Wii more. I'm surprised it isn't really having that much effect already, for me I'd think with a library like the Wii's and an audience like the casual gamer it's only a matter of time until the pre-owned and cheaper market engulfs first hand sales. For the well advertised heavy marketed games not so much but surely stuff like Game Party and Carnival Games can't sell when there are cheaper minigame stuff second hand?

But yeah, it's not killing it, because it's been around for over 15 years without anyone trying to stop it. It keeps the retail industry of gaming alive, which in turn sells more games. Furthermore, with online retail becoming popular, the second hand game market is being used less.

I'd imagine we're not far off the whole market using digital distrubution anyay, they need to stop the whole game sharing thing though lol.

 1. Alot of casuals that buy the type of games you are reffering to buy them at walmart or tru. Core gamers are the ones who buy it new play it for 3-4 weeks then trade it in for a decent value, basically getting the game for 20 bucks.

2. The type of games your are referring to drop in price very quickly. Example, game party has been 19.99 for almost its entire life. It sells used for 17.99.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

The only real answer would be to make games that people dont want to sell, and how realistic is that? lol

I don't want to sell any of my Wii games.  :)   Wouldn't be a collection if I did that.

Although I did get about 10% of them used...  so, someone wanted to sell some of them.  lol

Actually, it's strange how hard it is to find used Wii games.  :(   Gamestop has lots of them, but they tend to only be about 10% savings compared to new.  For $5 savings on a $50 game, I just get new...  Gamecrazy has better discounts, but they typically only have games I already have, or do not want...

You have it backwards, it's because the "hardcore" industry is dying that used game sales are so high. (hint: $60 price tag, caused by hugely bloated budgets).

I rarely buy any of my games used and i rarely sell them. I buy new game to keep and i dun buy them when they first come out. When i do buy used games though i usually have the intention to sell them back.

I TAKE NO SIDES

Just out of curiosity, why can the Jewelry, Movie, Gun, Book, Car, Music, and Appliance industries all thrive with bustling second hand markets, but games cannot? Given that practically every other comparable industry has a used saler market they live in harmony with, it seems like the problem is the Games industry, not second hand sales.

Here, let me lay this out with a math-ish analogy. If you see Industry [A] is losing money, and you pinpoint Issue [X], Issue [Y], and Issue [Z], you might claim that Issue [Y] is causing the losses. Without any further information, making conclusive statements isn't possible.

However, if you see Industry , Industry [C], Industry [D], Industry [E], Industry [F], Industry [G], and Industry [H] are doing fine, even though all of these industries also have Issue [Y], then it's fairly clear that Issue [Y] is not a dominating factor.

And again, that's essentially the place the gaming industry is in. Every other industry can not only survive but often thrive with a second hand market. So why can't video games? Either video games are super special and it's not fair to compare them to any other industry in the world, or there are other predominating factors which are much more significant and are the real cause for publisher's struggles. I'd propose again that the latter is more likely.

yes, used games are killing the market but I think used games are good for people who can't afford 60$ per new game.

I don't think its really a biger deal now than 10 years ago.

but I think the biggest affect that used games/sales has is a larger amount of 1st day sales. I think a great deal of people use trade ins to soften the price of whatever the new hype game is, so basically it saturates the market with million sellers that may not really deserve it, but with trade ins its basically an extended rental.

If I couldn't buy games used, I'd just rent, or borrow from friends. I don't see the big deal around used games - if the devs can't make a profit, things need to be changed on their end, not ours. I don't see the movie industry bitching about used DVD's "killing the market..."

Well i would be interested to know what the ratio of games developed vs movies released is, as it was said recently said that the games industry has taken over the movie industry revenue wise, and your average game costs 10-20m$ to make?

If the ratio was at parity then you would say that the games industry is taking the p*ss lol.

With at least half of those, value diminishes considerably with use (not really so with video games, unless you scratch the disc or something).

Movies and music are so cheap that the second hand industry doesn't get enough attention.

I don't know about books or jewelry though.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.
