Gameplay mechanics that need to die
Random battles: the only reason they were implemented in the first palce was because there wasn't enough power to display the monsters on screen, turn based is fine, just get rid of random battles.
lives: this was a gimmick in the arcades to get people to put in extra quarters, we don't need them anymore. they are usually just a set back that makes you restart the game where you left off, unnecessary.

Map-based battles have been around since at least the original Legend of Zelda, if not even sooner: even the NES was apparently powerful enough to display the monsters onscreen. Random battles are just a different style, for people who can handle a little unexpected combat. They are not an older or obsolete style, and retain the same place in gaming that they've always had.
If lives were a gimmick to get people to put in more quarters, why did they result in longer play per quarter: exactly the opposite of what you allege was their purpose? Again, they're just a different style, for people who can handle meaningful consequences for their mistakes. Again, they are not an older or obsolete style, and retain the same place in gaming that they've always had.
Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
