There where people expecting it to sell 30-70k first day, and around 100k first week.

And people expecting 200k first week, and people expecting 400k.

With the exception of a couple of joke posts the majority of the posters were expecting between 120-150k first day and 200-220k first week. No one seriously predicted that it would open with 30k, stop making things up.

No seriously... look at my like 2nd post. Those are all serious. BengaBenga said 200k LIFETIME!

The only reason I only mentioned "HD" was because XBOX 360 owners were the ones saying "PS3 can't sell JPRGs," and the like. It was a dumb argument to begin with, but at least now it's put to rest. Likely, it'll outsell every 360 JRPG in Japan, which should be enough to keep this argument down.

It's also the reason Stickball is all over this thread, because he was grossly incorrect in agreeing with that sentiment.

On a sidenote to stickball, IDK how you could enjoy any of the 360 JRPGs, save for LO and ToV, but seeing as that you didn't play PS1 JRPGs, your standards must be extremely low. Xenogears is probably one of the best JRPGs around, like Euphoria said, and you owe it to yourself to play some good JRPGs like that. Not mediocre ones like LO and the like. And don't get me started on IU, BD, and TLR.

SNES rpgs >>> PS1 rpgs.

Hard to say...

Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Star Ocean: The Second Story, FF VII-IX, Valkyrie Profile, SaGa Frontier 1-2, Grandia, Lunar 1-2, Legend of Mana, Legend of Dragoon, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Chrono Cross Breath of Fire 3-4...

Against: Secret of Mana, Tales of Phantasia, FF IV-VI, Terranigma, Secret of Evermore, Chrono Trigger, Illiusion of Gaia, Star Ocean, Bahamut Lagoon...

Maybe I missed a couple... but my choice goes for the PS1.

As for WKC, nice... I hope it does 350-400k LTD (or more thanks to online, Japan seems to love it). For now my primary concern is actually getting the game.

Bahamut Lagoon is a SRPG

I can add many quality missed titles to the arguement but largely i must know whether you mean to include SRPG... or rather they are only included when bolstering "JRPG Lineups".

Some that come to mind in the traditional end.  EARTHBOUND, Act Raiser, EVO, Robotrek, 7th Saga, Lufia, Lufia 2 and Super Mario RPG.

I knew I forgot some!

As for BL, it's a SRPG sure, but it has a JRPG vibe to it.

I disagree... plot wise.... you could argue... but that's every SRPGS plot too "Oh no the evil empire attacked us, lets fight back!"

Furthermore the end results are much different then your prototypical RPG.

Excellent news!

I knew haters would come with "it hasn't surpassed expectations" even though so many people were saying

Why is this a surprise?

The number of PS3s in Japan easily tops the number of 360s. Of course it would be the largest HD JRPG in Japan ever released... its like.. the PS3's first JRPG. (I don't count Folklore and VC as traditional JRPGs)

Why haven't Wii JRPGS sold tons then

Because the Wii owners, unlike the PS3 owners don't care less for JRPGs. Mario games only for them.

Haven't you noticed why DMJ had to include the "HD" JRPG as a conditional?

Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors Square Enix 0.50m
Pokemon Batoru Reboryūshon Nintendo 0.31m
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World Namco Bandai 0.22m

WKC has yet to top any of these. It will overtake the Tales spinoff next week, but lifetime against Pokemon should be close. It doesn't have a chance at the Dragon Quest spinoff.

Big name JRPG's on the Wii will sell, period. Have we already forgotten the announcement that DQX is arriving on the Wii? edit: Forgot to mention MH3. Only Mario on the Wii, right?

OT: Sales are a little better than I expected, not bad. Still, the PS3 hasn't quite yet proven it can sell JRPG's better than the 360 worldwide, which was the argument (I thought) some of the "Xbots" claimed, one I agree with. As for people calling Square-Enix idiots for putting their games on the 360, I'm not sure what to think... if you're implying WKC showed the PS3 is a more viable JRPG platform, I suggest looking at the Wii's DQ spinoff, which opened at 310k first week over a year ago.

I think those 3 wii examples prove that Wii sells jRPG badly :) WKC at ToS level after 1 week and should easily catch up to Pokemon in next month, only Dragon Quest might be out of reach

all 3 of those wii games are spin offs and budgets don't begin to compare with WKC.  Fire Emblem and Tales have shown that RPGs on the wii can do well in the west as well.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

The examples only prove that there are no high budget JRPGs on Wii yet. I'm sure Dragon Quest Swords costed less than 20% of WKC to develop. Next year we can judge sales of Wii JRPGs. I can guarantee you that Wii will have most best selling RPGs by the end of 2009 and will be the console of choice for JRPGs.

FYI some of the RPGs for next year on Wii (every fan of the genre might want to consider a wagglebox):

RPG

Fragile: Farewell Ruins of the Moon

Muramasa: Demon Blade

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearer

Kizuna

Dynamic Slash

Little King Story

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI

Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga

Monster Hunter 3

Arc Rise Fantasia

Uh. Romance XI really isn't an RPG.

It's not even really a SRPG.

It's more in the vein of the oldschool advance wars typce simulation war games.

The only ones that have a decent amount of RPG (and really more SRPG) aspects are 8 and 10.
