Man, that graph is ugly. If you add up all the profits and losses, the gaming division is at a net loss. Wow. I suspect we'll see a PS4, but I wouldn't be shocked if we didn't.

Yeah, cause the article fails to list the bulk of PS1 profits from 95 on.

The gaming division is still at about a 1 billion net gain from PS1 - PS3.

 Is it only 1 billion?

In all these years from Dec 1994, Sony has made only one paltry billion $ on video games?

Actually I think it's more like $1.6 billion currently:

This table doesn't include the last quarter, when SCE lost $300-$400 million if I remember correctly.

Total profit could well go under $1 billion in a few months...

Well at one point, they were at positive four or five billion Pre-PS3.

@ NJ5

Yeah, I knew it was somewhere around the 1 billion mark.  And yes, it could go under a million in a few months.

That link doesn't jibe with the WSJ graph.  Just compare 2001.

PSone..103(approx) million units sold
PS2.. 140million, as of jul '08
ps3... 18.82 million units sold
psp.. 42.3 million units sold.

And the cumulative balance is JUST 1 BILLION dollars in the black with approx. 300 million units of hardware sold in 14 yrs. WOW this shit just got a whole lot deeper.

XBOX... 25 million sold

360... 28 million sold

And the cumulative balance is negative six billion.

Shit just got real.

meh profit is for the weak, takes a real company to lose money. makes you stronger

What, must we destroy the company to save it?

Over that same time Nintendo made 11 billion, i mean Sony dominated Nintendo during that time, that is the N64 and gamecube period.  Yea there is the gameboy/DS but we're talking about a difference of 10 billion in profits.  I bet Nintendo made more on the N64/gamecube alone then the whole playstation brand has made since it started.  Now that is interesting.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Considering the drop in PS2 revenue over that time, I think that graph looks pretty dang good. The electronics part sucks though.

Sony has a huge number of 1st and 2nd party releases in 2009, and the hardware will only become cheaper to manufacture (actually it already has, in the latter half of 2008, which isn't shown here). I can't see how 2009 couldn't be profitable -- they'd have to start R&D on the PS4 in order to hamper it into the red, and I'm pretty sure they won't do any such thing.

@djmeister

Thats a huge fuckup for m$, omg they'r screwed too :) but lets look at some facts..

-size of M$ based on market capitalization :230 billion

-Size of SONY based on capitalization : 38 billion

Now lets compare both those losses/profits again: -6 billion for M$ vs 1 billion for SONY

NET INCOME 2008:

M$- $17.68 billion profit

SONY- $3.69 billion profit

-The games division at M$ is finally in the black and will probably continue to do so for the remaining life of the xbox 360.

-SONY's woes with profit are likely to continue for atleast another fiscal year.

M$ can absorb losses very well due to its strong PC dominance, so atleast their fuck up wont ruin them in the long term
