Forums - Sony - Just got an 80GB PS3... Questions!

1. PS2 Backward compatibility... I've heard there is software... but others tell me it's only for the 120GB model... What's the deal?

2. Do trophies work pretty much just like trophies achievements (typo)?

3. Do any games support over 4 players one one system yet? (I don't think...)

4. Do USB keyboards work w/ it (& for the internet browser) like the Wii & 360...

5. How much more do Blu-Ray movies cost to buy and rent than regular DVD's?

Thanks in advance!

1. No BC (It says it on the box)

2. You get trophies just like you get achievements

3. Edit: Oops read the question wrong, I'm not sure if any game supports this.

4. Not sure about this one

5. Where I rent them it's 1$ more.

Yes USB keyboards and bluetooth wireless keyboards work on the ps3, you just need to register it in the settings.

The old 80GB model was BC. The new one (the 65nm CPU/65nm GPU one) is not.  All PS3s have PS1 software emulation.

Here's a SKU list for those interested:

60GB (full hardware BC), 90/90nm

20GB (full hardware BC), 90/90nm

old 80GB (hardware/software BC) 90/90nm

40GB (no BC) 65/90nm

new 80GB (currently in production, no BC) 65/65nm

160GB (currently in production, no BC) 65/65nm

Sony no longer sells a BC model of the PS3. That's one of the cost-cutting measures they've taken to reduce the cost and turn a profit (no more PS2 GS).

1) Nope.

2) Well yes, they are trophies... if you meant do they work like Achievements, then yes for the most part. Instead of a number, you have Bronze, Silver and Gold trophies, and a Platinum for collecting all other trophies in a retail game. These give you experience, which levels you up. I am on Level 4 right now.

3) Sports games do, Resistance and R2 offer 2 players on the same system, CoD4 has four player competitive on the same system.

4) Absolutely

5) A fair bit, don't know the exact figure.

  1. Don't know for sure but I *think* new PS3's just don't have BC though don't quote me on that.
  2. Is this like asking if chairs work like chairs?
  3. Other than Scene It, Rock Ban, Guitar Hero, and maybe some arcade games, I don't think there are any others though again could be completely wrong.
  4. Yes
  5. If you can find deals, they cost about as much as new DVD's, otherwise movies are $10-15 more and boxed sets/series are $30+ more.

1. None of the new models support BC yet.

2. Yes, trophies work like trophies.

3. Buzz Quiz TV, LBP, COD4, CODWaW, R2, Sports games, Motorstorm PR, and others

4. Yes

5. Depends, I bought Transformers BD for 10 bucks new on BF, usually movies are about $5-10 more to buy and renting will be the same if you do a monthly plan at Blockbuster or netflix. Right now you can find great deals to buy movies on Amazon or at retail.
