what is a surge protector?

A surge protector is an appliance designed to protect electrical devices from voltage spikes. A surge protector attempts to regulate the voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or by shorting to ground voltages above a safe threshold.

That doesn't mean you don't need surge protectors. A surge can be caused by a number of things among them: use of high power electrical devices like Air Conditioning and refrigerators, faulty wiring, downed power lines, lightning, etc. Especially in the summer when the energy grid takes a toll I've seen the transformer blow down the block (I live near a series of huge transmission lines) and if I didn't have a network of surge protectors who knows what would happen to my equipment. Honestly I have very basic models and after seeing what happend at my friends' place I really need to upgrade at least to something more protective.

ah, so you also live in an underdeveloped country.

I live in US and Ialways use surge protectors, doesn't matter where you are, if there is a risk of anything causing a voltage spike you need a surge protector

Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Never had a surge here, we only have a surge protector at all because it is similar to a multiple socket extension, and it's just a charging laptop, the router and the modem plugged into it.

In fact, don't standard fuses (that come in all UK wall plugs) basically do the same thing as a surge protector, the only difference being surge protector can handle more.

Just unplug the AC adaptor from the wall and the Wii and let it sit for a few hours to a day. That's always fixed this problem for me.

Yup, try this.

Underdeveloped Country -- A nation which, comparative to others, lacks industrialization, infrastructure, developed agriculture, and developed natural resources, and suffers from a low per capita income as a result.

This is the best joke thread that you could come up with? This is why Rolstoppable is so popular.

I highly doubt you can call where I live to be Underdeveloped, like the other poster I live in the US.

I don't think you can call faulty wiring (which wasn't in place when the home was built but occurred over time) to be the reason for "lacking infrastructure"

Neither can you call downed power lines as such. I've seen heavy wind know tree branches/leaves into the wires crossing across the streets and causing sparks to fly

and having a blown transmission in the summer when use is heavy can't be classified as lacking either when the utility company has equipment set to handle most amounts imagined its only when use goes extremely over that this has happened. (Again I only mentioned the ONE time that I actually saw my transformer blow as it could be seen from my window, 2nd floor of apt building)

and lastly I can't imagine counting an act of nature such as a lightning strike causing a surge to be the fault of poor infrastructure either
