Forums - Gaming - PS3’s graphics will streak ahead of 360’s in ‘09? But does it really matter?

Gran Turismo 5 prologue1080p 60fps > Forza 2 720p fps unknown.

this year we had

mgs4 <--> gears 2, though gears 2 can be done on the ps3, as UT 2008 was.
lbp <--> banjo
next year we have

gran turismo 5 vs maybe forza 3 GT will likely win
heavy rain vs , alan wake. not sure in this one haven't seen it running in the 360 yet

killzone2 vs halo 3 recon, i already see a clear winner

and by style
yakuza 3 vs Star ocean 4 which both games look pretty similar.

i think any of those games can be ported back and forth

Uncharted 2, killzone 2, and heavy rain are games i really won't think the 360 would be able to handle that easily.

Any title which uses deferred rendering (which is actually much easier on the PS3 than the X360... probably the only thing that's easier, but its a big, big deal) is going to surpass a title which doesn't, this gen. It increases the effective performance of the PS3 GPU by a truckload.

The X360's memory architecture actually makes it pretty difficult to do deferred rendering. Thus PS3 games can do all sorts of fancy pixel shader stuff in just a single pass -- yielding some pretty nice looking scenes, at a decent framerate. The X360's flexible GPU is, in pretty much all regards, somewhat superior to the PS3's RSX, but this particular rendering technique really turns the tables in a big way.

It takes some skill to implement properly though, so you're not going to see it in cross-platform games, unless the developer wants to spend a truckload of money making the PS3 and X360 versions a lot different (i.e. delayed ports could maybe do it, but often don't anyway).  "Superior graphics" pretty much applies to PS3 exclusives only, for this reason.   That being said, the PS3 does have an awful lot of big exclusives coming in 2009.

As I said, graphics do matter to everyone but to varying degree and how much it matters increases by time as expectations and perceptions increase by time.

@CGI, who said "So far, the PS3 has already surpassed the 360 in terms of physics, animation and in some games, sound quality. "

You're telling that as if there is a huge difference. Sound quality is almost irrelevant, and it's simply not possible to distinguish physics and animation from overall graphical quality. And there is hardly any game on ps3 that is considerably superior than 360. For every 1 game that is superior on ps3, there are more than 1 game superior on 360 (say its because of rushed ports, for whatever reason). The difference is and will never be bigger than xbox vs ps2. The only remaining aspect is AI, and ps3 can considerably surpass 360 on AI but I think there is hardly anybody out there to harness that as the benefits will not justify the extra cost for developing complicated AI algorithyms.

The biggest problem with PS3 is they're releasing uncharted 2, heavy rain and god of war 3 after Resident Evil 5, which has better graphics and superior tech on all counts. That's really a mistake going forward, people will look back and say it was a mistake for PS3 exclusives to look worse then a multiplatform game.

Claim : "Uncharted 2, killzone 2, and heavy rain" can not be done on Xbox 360

Defence :

Quake 2 was done on PSX (2 MB main memory + 1MB graphics memory), while PC required 24 MB Ram + 8 MB graphics Ram. So anything is possible. Those games above may not be EXACTLY possible on 360, but with some modifications and comprimises, they can definitely be done on 360. Besides if they were designed for the 360 from the beginning, I'm sure they could have matched and outdone PS3 on several aspects, though PS3 could still have advantages on other aspects.

So please dont come here with comments like "This title cannot be done on 360, its simply not true. It can be done and the difference will be equal or less than the ports from 360 to PS3, or multiplatform titles in most cases. The amazing thing here is that 360 came one year earlier for a cheaper price, that deserves appreciation!

It's important to remember the nature of certain people, remember when the 360 wasn't supposed to be able to do these:

Of course half of them went multi-platform (and the 360 got the graphically best versions) and the other half aren't all that impressive any more and are obviously withing the 360s measurable abilities.

The only exception so far is Killzone 2 and even then, it's time is limited, it's only a matter of months before the inevitable Crysis on consoles, Rage, Doom 4 and any other suprises show up and prove without a doubt that 360 and PS3 are technically on equal footing.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue runs at 720p during gameplay.  Forza 2's runs at 720p.

As for your other statements I won't bother to comment since nobody would know unless the games were actually ported over or they have indepth programming knowledge of both the PS3 and 360 and the engines for those games.

you're not really serious here. are you?

I don't care what the hell they do with RE5. Heavy Rain, Alan Wake, Uncharted 2, and possibly KZ2 will wipe the floor with it graphically

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

Alan Wake might given that they have largely comparable graphics and it is a GTA level of freedom which is a significant technical milestone, Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain from what they've shown look worse and they're way behind on tech as well since RE5 has split-screen too, plus coming out 8-9 months later doesn't really help their case. The point of these exclusives is to raise the bar, not match it or fall short.

It's the same thing that happenned with CoD4 and Resistance 2, after CoD4, it's not surprising R2 was berated for it's visuals.

KZ2 is nice and in gameplay it looks good, better then RE5's gameplay but in comparison to cutscenes, RE5 has more going on and uses and incredible "noise" filter that really gives these scenes a CG level quality, and though there's nothing wrong with KZ2 cutscenes, they not king of the castle.

So the PS3 will win the graphics arms race by rendering nudey pictures? Thats so unfair! Quick Microsoft, get that interactive 3d porn exclusive!
