Civilization and Advance Wars are quite the opposite of a RTS game. Two of the best turn-based strategy franchises ever created.
My all-time favorites in RTS genre:
1. Dune II: Battle for Arrakis
2. Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness
3. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
4. Age of Empires
5. Command & Conquer
Honorable mention goes to The Settlers II (it is often mentioned as RTS, especially by English speaking people, but I think it's a building sim with very few strategy elements. Anyway: it was a great game).

Mine as well... to my knowledge.
In large part because of the programmable AIs and the AI wars that were held.
Ahh good times.
I wonder if there are any other RTS comes with programmable AIs that i can turn on each other.
Settlers and dune 2, I just have to list them both because they are so different. All new rts games have been quite meh...

I dont think the Total War games count, certainly not the main campaign at that is TBS, so my favourite is:
Company of Heroes!
Starcraft and the first Command&Conquer for historical reasons.
