Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Says There Are No Plans for Further PlayStation

Sony isn't going to have a particularly happy holiday this winter season, largely due to the fact that its flagship product, the PlayStation 3, is losing the console war against its main opponents, the Xbox 360 and the massively popular Nintendo Wii.

Although some analysts, like Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter, have linked the poor sales with the slow adoption rate of HDTVs, other people are considering the fact that the Japanese company might even detach itself from the PS3 and make a new console, which would be more competitive with its rivals.

And so, rumors of a PlayStation 4 have started to surface, but, as soon as they appeared, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, David Reeves, came forward with a statement regarding the possibility of his company developing a new console. Reeves declared to the Dutch TV station RTL that such a thing wasn't in the long-term plans.

“I'm not even sure if that's being considered,” said Reeves. “It's certainly nothing I can talk about. I have absolutely no knowledge of it whatsoever. Not even sure it's being planned. We're still continuing to develop products that we put in our mid range plans six months ago, one year ago.”

Even though these statements are very well founded, it does seem that Sony intends to support the PS3 for quite some time. This goes along with the statement that Microsoft made regarding this current console generation, namely that it would be the longest that the gaming industry has ever known.

Until other rumors pop up, it's safe to say that a new PlayStation won't appear for a while. Let's hope that Sony will offer more support for the current console and make it more attractive for the regular customers.

Oh noes!! No PS4?!!?

360 really monopolized the game!

So PS3 might be the last Play Station by the sounds of things. Blu-Ray in the PS3 was a huge gamble and it has not worked out at all for Sony.

oh god ! Sony is finished :)

you want them really to tell you when they will release the new console?did MS say when they will release their new console?Oh NoeZZZ no Xbox720 i guess

As someone said "PS3 was a living sacrifice for Blue-Ray"...

Not even the G-man can save teh PS3...

Sony have led to their own demise in the console industry and no one else can be blamed but Sony. Sony's game division peaked in 2003 thanks to the success of the PS2 and now 5 years later it looks all but over.

Sony rises to dominance with PSX, Sony peaks with PS2 and now Sony falls with PS3.

The economy has had a detrimental impact upon Sony as a whole. Takes a look at Sony's share price - Ouch. Sony as a whole is striggling as organisation in all its business section. Economy has taken a huge hit over the last 12 months and it will take a while to get going again.

May you rest in peace, Sony

Well, us consumers might as well leech off the PS3 as long as we can.

HDTV sales arent sluggish as seen here in the States on Black Friday. Furthermore Sony as a whole does quite well despite the fact sales on the PS3 are lagging behind its competitors. The video game industry is one thing that is completely uneffected by the recession..in fact video game sales for November are up from the previous month. Also You forget that Sony is selling decent numbers of consoles overseas as well as there PS2 sales and the PSP.
