I see now that FF12 probably isn't as bad as it seemed to me. As I said, I expected it to be a standard RPG experience, because nothing about how it presented itself made me think otherwise. And since playing it like a standard RPG worked at least somewhat for a while, I was inclined to believe that it was just a poorly designed RPG. I probably could enjoy it if I did figure out the nuances of how to make it enjoyable, in fact. But the thing is, after suffering it as a standard RPG, I now have no desire to do that.

This is the death knell of so many games... They may well be very good experiences and have the potential to really drag you in, but it's all for naught if you don't figure out the way of playing that makes them fun. I know just how harsh it can be, as I have literally played both sides of the coin for a game before: Vagrant Story. Originally, I hated Vagrant Story. Nothing seemed to work for me in that game. I just could not figure out what I was supposed to do, and so chalked it up to bad game design and quit playing. About a year or two later, I went back and gave the game a begrudging second chance. After I discovered the depths of weapon/armor combining, and got the knack of timing reaction and chain commands, the game became very fun indeed. I practically played Vagrant Story to death after that, loving every minute of it.

Expectations are deadly things for a game. They can taint your experience and make what may well be a fantastic game seem absolutely horrible, just because you're not playing it "right". And it's not the game's fault, either; the game isn't bad or anything, it's just that the designers didn't make it clear without a shadow of a doubt which course of action was best and which was not going to work.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this post.

The one thing I'll add is that it can be a fine line between making it clear what you should do, and just holding your hand the whole way through the game.

FFVI is my personal favorite but for the story, the gameplay imo was better in FF4.

I thought FFVIII was gay and FFXII had worse grinding than most Korean MMORPG's.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Why using "gay" as an insult?

Yeah, using "gay" as an insult isn't very cool.

And, again: you weren't supposed to be grinding, and even if you wanted to there's an item, of which you can buy as many as you like, which doubles your experience gained per encounter.

There is a fine line, it's true, theRepublic. That's why I pointed out the nature of intuitive games. Titles where you can figure out what the game expects of you right away, where you have no trouble getting into the swing of things, are the best sorts of games, and why the original Dragon Quest made RPG history.

Nobody would call Dragon Quest a hand-holding experience; you were quite likely to get killed on a regular basis your first time through, in fact (thank goodness they opted for a merciful system wherein there was no true game over!). But the solution never seemed obtuse; leveling up and buying better equipment was easy to learn, took no deep thought to fully grasp, and never failed to solve the problem. Even though the game was pretty grind-heavy, the grind actually did have an impact, and each level up or new equipment purchase really felt meaningful and had definite results.

Second Disk ruined it for me.  I think the nicest word I could use at this point for it is gay.

Also grinding aside, I didn't FFXII because I felt Vaan and Penelo were extremely out of place.  Ashe and Basche(can't spell today) were more main character matter in my opinion.

and Kirby007 - I agree with you 100%

Well, it's surely the best Wii game out.

Vaan and Penelo were there for their perspective, not for their role in the plot, though Vaan's influence on Ashe is very important over time.

Yes, Ashe is easily the biggest player in that particular drama, with Basch (as her knight) being the primary ass-kicker.

You're all wrong guys. Fran owns them all

Amen to this thread!

Final Fantasy 6 > That emo crap that 7 was
