Forums - Sales - Will PS3 eventually pass 360?

there have been no big sequel on the PS3 yet no God of War no SOCOM no new Madden there are plenty of reasons why PS3 has not caught up with 360 yet but things will change what will be driving 360's new sales after Halo3? 2008 will start to see a larger gap in monthly sales and a fairly great gap when MGS4 releases. it looks as if 360 sales are taking a serious decline maybe the price drop will help but I don't think droping the price by less than the cost of a new game is going to make the regular guy go buy one, but sure it should give a lil boost. I would say by the end of 2008 Sony will be in a Very good position to reclaim the top spot this generation (depending what Nintendo offers in 2008) and somewhere mid 2008 should pass 360.

MS for the most part made sure that the PS3 would one day pass it when it refused to drop the price by $100 earlier this year, when it chose to ignore the 360's hardware defects, and when it failed to cover more genres other than shooters, racing/driving sims, and sports.

The 360 does decently in N. America, but it does poorly in Europe and downright horribly in Japan. The fact that the PS3 is still outselling it in those regions despite the price difference and less software should ring a bell. The PS3 appears to have the bigger and more diverse lineup in 2008. The 360 has some anticipated titles coming, but it's still a pretty one-dimensional showing. There still isn't a prominent platformer, JRPG, offstyle racer, or action/adventure game. The software of the 360 exclusively targets older american males, which is why it's only managed to do well in NA. The 360's hardware sales have actually decreased month over month throughout the year despite more software. They even decreased the month that Forza 2 was released.

The PS3 will probably be at $300 by next Christmas, and while the 360 could be at $199, it still won't matter because they'll both be at mass market price point(the $299 PS1 and PS2 outsold the $199 N64 and Gamecube) and the 360 doesn't seem to have anything to answer FFXIII and GT5.

That being said, 2008 is a bit too early. I'd say the PS3 passes it some time in 2009.

Umm i stopped reading when you said xbox had the least diverse game not having any jrpgs......

considering that at the moment xbox has more jrpgs then ps i dont know what your talking about. As for saying that games wont push sales then we could say that about every single person who says ff etc will push sony.

As for ps3 being 300 thats possible if sony wants to lose even more money on the ps3, they are losing huge ammounts and unless they can really decrease production costs it would cost a fortune to drop it this low.

I can see the possiblility of it being that low but it all depends on cost of production and if blue ray wins the HD format (its winning right now ) =)

jjseth, you're basically saying that strating NOW the PS3 will move over 200000 a week, basically becoming another Wii, and will coninue that way into the end of 2008 and surpass the 360? Because doesn't that seem extreme.
Please don't put words into my mouth.  What I'm saying is that the 360 will see weaker then expected sales due to the fallout of the failure rate news.  Sales have started to slow down and I don't think that even the price drop and 3 year warranty will help them out that much.  There are people who have been soured due to sending back their 360 multiple times and have only one choice to go to for next gen graphics and games.
BTW, what console is selling 200k units a week right now?  Wii would be the closest to that, while the PS3 and 360 would do that in a month right now.  During the holiday season?  Sure, the PS3 will have no problems selling that many units.  I can see the PS3 being on many xmas lists.  At least, more then I would expect the 360.   I'm not predicting that it would be a hugeamount that the PS3 will outsell the 360 for the rest of this year, just a tiny bit and it may even bounce back and forth some weeks.  Then when the AAA games for the PS3 come out, we will see sales truly explode for the PS3.  I also would suspect that there would be yet another price drop on the PS3 sometime from now until then to encourage even more to make the move and buy a PS3.
I had to go back to my post to see where in the world you got the idea that I said the PS3 would sell 200k a week and couldn't see how you could have thought that.  However I did see an error, I stated that starting in 2009 that sales would take off, I meant in early 2008. :)

so every argument that it will be in 2008 is based on huge aaa titles coming out, well if we all havent knowticed xbox is having that season during this year.

So according to most of you games will push the playstation but it wont push the xbox? now i find that hard to believe.

I can see ps3 overtaking xbox but in 2009 at earliest but hey its always up to the consumer so who knows

Leave it to AllAll to make such a intressting post, I don't think I have seen you post once were you are argumenting. Either you make a post like before or you defend someone that some of us think is trolling.

The post above is even more intressting when thinking of that the majority is saying that PS3 will pass Xbox360, some not just think it will be during 2008. Myself thinks that PS3 will pass xbox360 WW but it will be a though raise and I don't excpect it to take out 360 in USA.Of course better games for PS3 will increase sales, but untill 2009 I don't see neither 360 or PS3 to have massmarket price leaving the 360 and PS3 fighting over the hardcore market. So according to me earliest somewhere in 2009 the PS3 will pass 360.

I belive that the gap during 2007 will be more or less the same, mayby plus minus a couple of 100k:s. I belive that Halo 3 will boost xbox360 sales in USA and that they will have a better christmas period than PS3 (in USA) if microsoft plays their cards right. The price cut for 360 should (I think) increase the sales in USA to be atleast even with the PS3. Europe and Japan will probarbly give an advantage for PS3 to regain thos couple of 100k I was speaking about before.

I also think if PS3 start to sell better in NPD than x360, Microsoft will be more aggresive in the price war and with bundles etc. At least if the PS3 starts to move some software.

wow yet again with this bs. THE 360 is doing HORRIBLE if the PS3 is doing badly. The ps3 has yet to have a real winter season sale yet. on top of that, as HDTV's increase, and blu-ray dominates, the ps3 will blow past the 360. Blu-ray may be the reason for a bad start, but it will also be the reason for its sales increase once HDTV's gain more momentum. By the end of next summer theyll be almost even. The xbox only has one more big boom left for them (halo 3) as they reach the limits of their console (disk space).

Of course alot of people like to ride the media BS, but reality is that Playstation was expected to do better, but it hasnt. That DOESNT mean that the xbox is really doing better tho. it was expected to sell like crap in comparison but its keeping up. 10 years with blu-ray being the dominant format? be realistic.

 First welcome to VGchartz...

Then to  the 10 years with blu-ray being the dominant format. I guess you mean that it will stay long if blu-ray wins. The only problem I have with that idea is that PS2 (which is on its seventh year I think and still going strong in USA is most probarbly not sold as a DVD-player today. If blu-ray wins now, we will have massmarket priced blu-ray players from Sony, Samsung etc and the usual "cheap" brands that all will be cheaper than a PS3.

DO some math and you might find thats very highly unlikely.

I mean i believe that ps3 will pass xbox cause its just a better console, but for now with xbox having the best games coming i dont see it happening no t that fast, just unreal to be that fast, but hey who knows no one knows the future

yeah now that i actually saw that guys calculations summer 08 might be too fast. I think the best games coming is arguable though, Killzone Lair Warhawk MGS4 Little Big Planet and Final Fantasy...other than Halo and Gears of War 2, what titles are on the same level as those? Game quality might drive the 360 a bit longer, but everyone knows its a matter of time before the ps3 will catch up (and pass IMO) in graphics. Why buy a system taht will be equal at best without an HD player/ upconverter to save $100? Thats not even two games...
You either would have to rich enough to have both, or impatient enough not to wait for games.

Well if you include games like killzone and lair that are unproven (unlike final fantasy) xbox can easily throw up games like bioshock (best game awards from alot of major sites) mass effect (rpg of the year from a huge ammount of sites) halo 3, blue dragon (that a maybe on that one) and lost odyssey. Now thats just talking about this year.

Most of the games you argued are next year which then i could throw in halo wars, fable 2, gears of war 2, and too human.

There is no doubt better games for xbox this holiday (shame on fanboys who disagree) but i do think ps3 has a brighter 2008 year so far then xbox
