I'd get an Xbox 360 for a few reasons
1) Cheaper
2) Live
3) I prefer their exclusive IPs
4) Multi-plats generally appear to perfom slightly better
5) MS appear much more active in sourcing new games and given the PS3 lacklustre performance will continue to get more and more content
That and I hate the PS controller, I always have. Sony would need to start doing a lot of things right before I consider the PS3 and that could take a while.

You do if you want to get the most out of the console, otherwise you miss out on alot of the finer details that only HD can show. They do look nice on SD TVS though but to actually see how much better they are to last gen you have to plug em into a huge HD TV. Otherwise the wii graphics on SD are all you need :D

I don't need another "double-feature incident" (I like my mind too much to have it blown to smithereens), I just need it to work. So what do you think: should I get the 360 Arcade model and spring for an External Hard Drive later? Or do you think I should hold out for a better price for a better model, i.e. a Core or Elite model?

It depends on if you ever want to go online, if you want to download games or Netflix, and if you care about backwards compatibility.
If the 20-dollar 20GB deal is still going on, that will be the best bang for your buck, probably, but you'll only have room to install one or two 360 games to your hard drive.

Most reviewers an expert video game analysis believe XBox 360 is superior than PS3 in terms of graphics. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Online is the only one of those things I give two craps about... If I want download-only software, I could just use WiiWare more often... If I want movie rentals, I could just go to Blockbuster... If I want old games, that's what the Virtual Console is for. But yeah, I want to be able to install more than one game on my hard drive, unless I am able to put multiple hard drives on one Arcade model...

I know you only like games with good graphics, but the PS1 library rocks! I just got Persona 2 and the Arc the Lad Collection as well as Lunar!

That being the case, I would just wait until a more reasonable price for the Pro and the Elite. The Elite in particular can hold a whole mess of games, but the Pro can still hold seven or eight.
