Forums - Microsoft - If U were MS, what would you do to restore goodwill?

I don't think Microsoft leaving the console business would be a good thing since competition usually pushes companies to do better.

To restore goodwill they need to get systems back to customers very quickly and ensure that people won't have overheating problems.  If they get this problem fixed this year it's likely in a year or so it wouldn't be a big issue for potential customers.

I think it would be a great idea for them to leave the console war, the ps1 only went of against the SNES and the games were huge. If it wasnt for microsoft we would be seeing sales like this

 ps3=15m

wii=10m

I knew I could count on Leo J to provide us with his insightful wisdom on the 360 as well.

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

 WHAT???? PS1 was going also against the dreamcast... and in term of line up even if it was a small (which mainely was the problem) the average game quality was way over PS1... Sony never diserved their results.... they just got lucky that Sega management was shit and nintendo entered a bad period....

and about MS they have been doing video games way before Sony entered the console war.... and usually really good games... and even now their gaming distribution list is of rather good quality....  but with age of empire, flight simulator, the madness collection.... they were way more in the market than people seem to realise...  without talking about all the pads and joystiq they have been doing for decades now....

if they are loosing money like that it's especially to come hard in the console market.... they will be loosing money until they take over... and I don't see them quitting... on that market you invest billion of dollars over a time periode of at least 20 years.... so it's far from over...

don't forget that it's still one of the bigest company in the world...  like the USA they might have debt like crazy but it's still nothing compare to their overall value.... they still make a net income of almost 17X what sony does

Yea sure...according to wikipedia

sony is worth more than 68billion since 2006

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony

Microsoft is worth 51 billion since 2007 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft

I cant find the 07 sony numbers but I dont think its 17billion lower. Microsoft is a SOFTWARE company, they are not hardware, they should get out of the console race, since they dont know what they are doing when building a console.

Competition is good yeah, but niether MS or Sony seem to want to admit they have competition, for any sort of competitive market to exist we would probably need products that are aimed at the same market (something they wont admit) and for them to be similarly priced.

MS should leave the games industry, for their own good, they have lost so much money so far it makes you wonder when they are going to call it a bad job and forget it. Halo would be better on the PC, no more crappy ports accross the high end of the consoles. no more exclusivity squabbles. no more MGS4 rumours! developers can finally focus more on one piece of hardware instead of 2.

Umm both Microsoft and Sony admit they have competition otherwise why would they be having price drops and both starting to make casual games?

They should leave the games industry for their own good?  They made record profits as a whole last year so it's not like Microsoft as a company is hurting.  They're also finally seeing things starting to pay off (offering online movies, tv shows, etc).  They're also responsible for funding a lot of game development, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Too Human, Fable 1 & 2, Banjo & Kazooie 3, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and numerous other games in the past.  They may not be your kind of games but they're not shovelware either.

The PS1 was going against the SNES? I know this was before your time, but you should brush up on your videogame history a little bit. The PS1 had to compete against the N64 and the Saturn. The SNES was competing against the Genesis and TurboGrafx16.

I think the discussion has gotten too far off topic, the question was how would you restore goodwill.  How would leaving the console business and screwing your customers restore goodwill?  Answer, it wouldn't so people should stop suggesting it.

Leo, Please leave the Microsoft forum. Please. You have no clue what you are talking about. The poster stated NET INCOME which you so eloquently highlighted. You then quote net worth -- from a year old post at that. How much more clueless could you be? If you want to know what a company is "worth" from a stockholder's perspective, it is easy to look at "market cap" or the total number of shares of stock times the stock price. You can find up to date (as in daily) information almost anywhere -- Yahoo finance being quite easy.

8/6/07 Sony Market Cap = $50B

8/6/07 Microsoft Market Cap = $273.3B

Neither have anything to do with NET INCOME, however. Note that multibillion dollar enterprises collapse. It can and does happen. Shareholders don't care so much about the market cap as they do about how much money a company is making. Again, I repeat: Please leave the Microsoft forum and please learn to comment when you actually have something intelligent to say.

NOW, BACK ON TOPIC:

I agree that the "instant exchange" is probably the quickest and best thing MS can do to help restore faith in the console.  At least people will know they are going to be back up and gaming in just a few days regardless.

The PS1 was a different generation from the SNES. Also, Sega's Saturn was already out when the PS1 was launched. So, it was competing mostly against the Saturn before the N64 came out.
