Forums - Sales - Just How Did Sony Topple It's Console Empire with PS3?

Lol at leo j. The simple answer, its not a mass appeal console. Its elite. Elite is almost never the winner. The console with games for everybody wins.

Its never going to be about the most metacritic scores over 80. Wii sports is in the 70's. Its about which console covers the desires of the widest spread of population. PSX and 2 had games for toddlers as well as Devil May Cry. Get it? If you have only AAA games on a console it can't win. It needs games for all.

I understand the logic of the Metacritic advantage between the Wii and PS3 (it's there), but when reaching out to Blue Ocean gamers, it throws away that kind of advantage.

Quiz: What's the best selling movie in theatres of all time? I'll give you a hint: It's not in the top-100 critically reviewed (or even user reviewed) movies of all time. Neither is Wii Fit or Mario Kart Wii, by the way, if we're using Metacritic numbers.

Wii has, to us, crap games. But to casual, new consumers, all they care about is the playability of a title. And heck, if Mario & Sonic, or Carnival games gives them that, then who am I to judge? I may disagree, along with most core gamers, but hey - at least they think it's fun, and are buying games! You know it's a wierd world for Sony gamers when Mario & Sonic can beat out Metal Gear Solid 4 by almost 2:1.

Titanic which won 11 oscars....

And has a 82% on Rotten Tomatoes/7.4 aggregate ranking. IMDB has it at 7.2 between 188,000 votes.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Mrstickball the PS3 has the games, it has a much better gaming library than the wii by far, people go gaga for it for watever reason, but based of metacritic the PS3 has nearly 100 games rated 80 or higher, while the wii has just nearly 40.

People are not buying the PS3 because of its PRICE, but the console is NOT OVERPRICED FOR WHAT YOU GET, and thats your argument, which is incorrect. You get far more value with the PS3 than you do from a wii at there current price points.

Really depends on how the consumer values the combination of those features.  Clearly the consumer feels the ps3 is overpriced.

And stop saying mrstickball is trolling for giving his opinion.

$ony screwed up because when they launched a console at $500/$600 (with $500 barely available) they launched for the Hardcore market only because of the price. This may have worked if they had launched a year before the competitors, but they didnt. Since the 360 had already launched and established a base with hardcore gamers and had titles for not only the hardcore when the PS3 launched this made the competition that much tougher. Thrown in the Wii as the casual juggernaut and all that was left was the hardest of the hardcore and the $ony console or no console crowd.

The PS3 has not been able to break past that because it just hasnt had any chance to pass the 360 in price nor quantity of quality titles and it hasnt been able to pass the Wii for the casual audience.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

The only good thing i see about everything that has happen to sony is that if not even the PS brand could sell at US$600.00 ( ups sorry US$599.99) no one will ever try that again, for eternity consoles will launch at around 300-400( or its equivalent value in the future).

What i really don't like about this is that competition is good but M$ is evil when competing and they may be planning to take sony out of the market and then Nintendo, and once that happens we will play what they want for the price they want.

What is the number one rule of business. Give the customer what they want. What is the second rule of business. It is ten times cheaper to keep the customer you have then to convince a customer you do not. What is the third rule of business follow the first two rules, and find out how you can profit by following the first two rules.

Somewhere along the line Sony forgot these three cardinal rules. Instead they began to view consumers as investors, expendable, and as assets to be used. Sony has the poorest of mindsets when it comes to gaming. You serve the customer. The customer does not serve you. You do not view customers as something you can do without. Customers are not pawns in your machinations. Which also justified their lying to customers, and abusing their trust.

You cannot break the three cardinal rules and expect to have your product be the most prized on the market. Yes a sucker is born every minute, and there are those blind to the abuse they are enduring. However the real problem for Sony starts with a shitty mindset. The view consumers with disdain, and treat them with no respect. That is how they could build a machine that did not appeal to them. They turned their backs on customer service it is as simple as that.

I don't think it's just the price. The competition from MSFT is there as well. A 600$ PS3 would sell alot better without the X360 in the market.

Currently playing on PS3: God of War III

Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII

Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

Yeah, but 249-299$/€ price would have basically killed the X360 so it is because of price.  Sony just had so stupid strategy.
