Forums - Sales - Graphical sales comparison...

Now that ioi has added PS2 data for "Others", its a good time to do a general comparison of sales since launch. I will focus on the PS2, PS3 & Wii in this thread.

...

Japan

The Wii has been tracking under the PS2 from start, but seems more consistent. It is about to intersect the PS2 line. 33 weeks, approx 3.1m sold (PS2 & Wii). The PS3 is sitting at around 1m - and is trending to flatten out if anything.

...

US/America

The Wii is slightly above the PS2, with a slightly stronger gradient (and has been from start). Apart from that, its pretty much neck & neck.

Like Japan, the PS3 is tracking below both - but sitting at closer to 50% of the sales (rather than 35% in Japan).

...

Others

The Wii & PS2 are neck & neck - exactly, with the same gradient as well.

Something odd with the PS3 curve (now seems aligned to the world launch, not the Europe launch?). Had a solid burst at start (800k+in opening 3 weeks), but has only sold another 350k since (last 13 weeks).

Taking into account the staggered launch, it seems to be tracking around 65% of the PS2/Wii totals - or around 40% when compared "as-is".

...............

Conclusion:

 - the Wii is selling on-par with the PS2 worldwide
 - the PS3 is selling around 40%-45% of the same total worldwide

Discuss?

Try it yourself - you can only chart three things at once.

Maybe try: PS3, Xbox, 360? Or PS3, 360, GC?

Very interesting. This means it's a reasonable prediction that Wii will sell 120 million units across its lifespan.

Interesting indeed
The PS3's ability to end up as a commercial failure or just as a disappointment now depends on Sony's ability to keep a steady flow of good games coming. As for the Wii, it looks poised to win the battle but to say it will equal the PS2, I think it's way too early.

Depending on how Nintendo responds to recent concerns on games quality from 3rd party developers and how their own games turn out, at this point it could very well sell a lot less or even a lot more than the PS2 in the end

well the ps2 was an extra $50 at launch without a game in america and an extra £120 without a game in the UK and similarly priced in the rest of europe, dont know about the prices in Japan.

If the Wii wants to do the same numbers as the ps2 shouldn't it be tracking well above the ps2 with the cheaper price? I think the wii will do extremely well but not as well as the ps2.

I think PS3 will be to the Wii as the PSP is to the DS. Sony will eventually get enough quality software out there and it'll eventually sell constantly at reasonable levels. It won't be a total failure, but it's no Wii.

A bit of caution I would add is that the PS2 didn't launch globally like the Wii so the Wii/PS2 comparison has the same problems as a Wii/PS3 one (that you noted). At the 8-9 month mark in the PS2's life it had just launched in NA and maybe Europe so the actual global numbers would be different than first 8 or 9 months everywhere.
