Forums - Gaming - 360 price cut finally official

Untamoi said: I think you got dollars and euros mixed. €280-€310 converts to around $390-$430, so actually consoles much more expensive in EU than you said. I think there should be price cut in EU also and perhaps in Japan too..

Ok, I have fixed that little mistake...

Microsoft Lowers Price of Xbox 360 by $50

Price drop coincides with release of "Madden NFL 08" on Xbox 360, one of many titles that make up the greatest holiday lineup in video game history.

REDMOND, Wash. -- Aug. 6, 2007 -- Microsoft Corp. today kicked off what was to be the greatest holiday lineup in video game history before GTA4 was delayed by announcing it will reduce the retail price of Xbox 360™ by a paltry $50 (U.S.) beginning Aug. 8 at United States retailers nationwide. Soon to follow, Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) will release its blockbuster video game title "Madden NFL 08" on Aug. 14 for every console ever made. "Madden NFL Football," one of the most important non-exclusive mass-appeal franchises in video games, was the top-selling game of 2006 and is the top-selling franchise of the past 10 years. Only Xbox 360 offers a console for all interests and budgets so long as that budget ain't poor.

"The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console in history while 360s gathered dust around the world and the competition significantly eroded our lead demonstrates that consumers believe that we overvalued a piece of faulty hardware," said Mitch Koch, corporate vice president, Global Retail Sales and Marketing Group, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft.. "On the eve of the best holiday games lineup ever if only we still had GTA4 and the launch of 'Madden NFL 08,' there has never been a better time to jump into Xbox 360 though in a few months we will have an improved system at an even lower price ."

Xbox 360 will enhance the value of its entire family of consoles beginning on Aug. 8. At a new price of $349.99, Xbox 360 offers an unsurpassed experience right out of the box with a 20 GB hard drive, wireless controller, Xbox 360 headset, and red rings of death. For those looking for the ultimate value and the freedom to customize their console as they see fit, Xbox 360 Core System now has an estimated retail price (ERP) of $279.99 (U.S.). Xbox 360 Core System provides everything gamers need to hit the ground running so long as they don't want to save their games while giving consumers the ability to add new features and accessories they want at obscene prices. Dressed in black and equipped with a 120GB hard drive, Xbox 360 Elite will be priced at an ERP of $449.99 (U.S.) for those who want the premium games and entertainment experience but not an HD-DVD player - that costs extra. In anticipation of this year's largest blockbuster game launch, the Xbox 360 Halo® 3 Special Edition Console will hit store shelves in September with an ERP of $399.99 (U.S.). Featuring an authentic Spartan green-and-gold finish sure to match any living room still sporting 1970's decor, this console will include a matching Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 20GB hard drive, Xbox 360 Headset an Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit and more.

In addition to being a great value, Xbox 360 is the only place consumers will be able to play all of this year's biggest titles that aren't published by Nintendo: "Guitar Hero III™: Legends of Rock" (RedOctane/Activision), "Halo 3" (Bungie), "Madden NFL 08" (EA) and "Rock Band" (MTV Games). Xbox 360 is also home to the most exclusive games, such as "Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation" (NAMCO BANDAI Games), "BioShock" (2K Games), "Lost Odyssey™" (Mistwalker and feelplus Inc.), "Blue Dragon" (Mistwalker and feelplus Inc.), "Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action," (Screenlife), "Naruto: Rise of a Ninja" (Ubisoft), "Project Gotham Racing® 4" (Bizarre Creations Ltd.) and "Mass Effect" (BioWare Corp.). With a record-setting attach rate of 6.1 games per console sold (NPD, June 2007), a new price and the almost-greatest holiday games lineup ever, Xbox 360 has proved itself as the home of the best games and entertainment at the best value.

Fixed.

That was absolutely hilarious.    Had me cackling quite a few times.  You should do Nintendo and Sony press releases next!

Ok, silly PR speak asside, am I the only one that thinks this will be a big help to the box? The price cut might not be as much as the PS3's, but neither was the original price. It moves the 360 one step closer to mass market price appeal, and simultaneously helps clear out stock to make way for the Griffin redesign. Sounds pretty good.

I think this and the new falcon revision of the 360 when it reaches stores will help sales.  Also reports of the new heat sinks in refurbished units stopping the RROD issue will help as well.  I think the biggest issue for the 360 and what's hurting it's sales is not the competition but it's overheating and quality issues (of course pricing is also a major problem).  Once those are behind the system it'll help a lot, unfortunately I think the RROD have caused the 360 to go from a 50 million seller in it's lifetime to more likely a 35 million seller.

I think they took the middle road on the price cut, they basically had 2 choices:

1) Cut the price at the end of summer, increases sales + boost from Halo, BS gets hardware moving again, but leaves a lot of potential money on the table from consoles that would've sold anyways.

2) Cut the price sometime in November, but might not get as big a boost from their lineup as expected.

Buy doing half a price cut (I consider it a $50 cut since most people would buy the premium), they are splitting the difference and can still do another price cut in November if they need to.

Currently Playing:  Saints Row 2 | Battlefield 2 | Company of Heroes

Recently Beaten: Gears of War | Super Mario Galaxy | Darwinia | MGS4 | Sam and Max Ep. 4, Portal | Mirror's Edge | Uncharted | Mass Effect

Looking Forward to: Alan Wake | Splinter Cell : Conviction | The Last Guardian | Batman: Arkham Asylum | SMG2 | Mass Effect 2 |

OK the headline wasn't MS gives $100 price cut so why is that part so misleading?

It is a price cut and it is a pretty savvy one... Timed really well to coincide with some new releases...

If it disappoints they have room to do another before Xmas.

As for it being a "farce", "misleading", "disappointing"... I think the most disappointing was the Sony $100 price cut on a discontinued model. The consumer thought they were getting a price drop over the long haul... That was misleading.

I think the PS3 price cut was dishonestly handled because they originally told us that 60 gig PS3s would be sold out by the end of the July (which likely pressured some people into getting one as quickly as they could) and now they're still available and likely will be for months to come considering the 360 price cut and GTAIV delay.

Yeah. Threat of higher price works pretty good indeed. I'm sure 80 gb PS3 costs $499 as soon as Sony will move current model. There is also another thing about 80 gb sku... people who rate extra 20gb and Motorstorm higher than $100 (even here we've heard about "inferior" 60 gb PS3) buy it right now because they believe there won't be a price cut - it's a great deal for Sony because it's cheaper to produce Only fool would reveal price drop of 80 gb model right now.

*stop for a sec, and thinks* oh yeah nobody else did a definitive price cut yet

I haven't read everything in that post.... but saying PR from MS bragging about the line up is the worst ever, I don't think so.... Sony is the king in misleading the masses with their emotion shit before and now their 4D.... saying they have the best line up ever might be pushing it for sure but it still is more accurate than when sony says they are the only one doing 4D....

just wanted to say that... but yeah it's a PR announcement you wanted them to say hey guys Sony is great....

Give me the revised hardware (falcon), and the 360 will be sitting on a shelf at my house.

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

Should change the thread title to, "Anything MS does isn't good enough."

I bet if they actually did do a $100 price cut people would find a way to bash them for that too.
