Net profit figures are more useful than gross sales figures when it comes to determining how a company is benefiting monetarily from a console, which along with installed base is a more important benchmark. Determining the cost of producing the console, its packaging and its distribution helps to determine net profit per unit. Keep in mind that the portion of the PS3 which is not a loss to Sony is still an expense. In both regards, the Wii seems to be doing better. The 360 is doing better in the US as well. Gross sales are interesting for determining how sales have been in an industry, but not useful for determining how two differently priced products have sold. Ignoring facts will not make them go away.
