Forums - Gaming - So, what's the deal with Go Nintendo and VGchartz?

Since nobody mentioned it; it isn't that incommon (although, VGC is getting more and more accepted all the time) to a lot of the sites to diss VGC (i actually ran into argument once with one site admin about VGC). Part of the reason is that people view the site as a provider of weekly figures and missing the whole picture.
As i see it, there two very valuable things that VGC provides: weekly figures with a close enough accuracy (it really doesn't matter whether Wii sold this this week 1,6 or 1,7 million units, when it opposes 500k units of PS3) and the historical data. You very rarely see VGC being bashed for its recorded sales history and graphs, since this is the only site you're able to find them.

And by "a lot" you mostly just mean Gaf.

Why is GoNintendo banned on Gaf?

Nintendo still doomed?

Nintendo sympathiser's maybe? read nordlead's post

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I don't remember, but if you read this thread you'll find out. I remember someone posted it in there.

or you could just take Word Of Wisdom's post, change some names, and just believe that except GAF hasn't gotten over it yet.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit

Seems to me they take the right approach. Much as I enjoy and appreciate this site, it irks me everytime the powers that be try to use their data for self aggrandisement - eg declaring that Nintendo Wii had surpassed 360 sales on such and such a date. Their estimates are good, but estimates, and they could do the do the same job by simply adding honest qualifiers to these sorts of announcements.

Where it matters is on the rare circumstance when records are broken or milestones reached. The Wii MAY have set a record with 1m sales last week in the Americas, but since the PS2, the current record holder, is within the 10% margin of error (with 960k), so using the VGChartz numbers to say the Wii actually HAS set the record would be premature.

@WoW: Well, it's pretty random. Pretty much depends on the users attitude towards VGC. Still what's important is, that there are less of them than what there were a year ago.

@Misterd: Actually, making the story by writing "according to VGChartz", is enough to make the "disclaimer". It says "we are writing what they told us" and leaves the judgement of the numbers accuracy to the reader. It's similar to making a story that starts "Pachter says".

You don't seem to get the idea of reading the numbers right; if we have a "VGC data 1" to compare "VGC data 2", the numbers are fully comparable, since we have the same tracker tracking with same methods and benchmarks. Although, since VGC benchmarks with shipment figures, last weeks numbers are comparable with numbers a couple of years back after they've been adjusted when shipment data comes in public.

IMPORTANT!!!

Let me clear this once and for all!!!!!

I have great contact with Kevin from GoNintendo. I email him news and items we have and most of the time he places those. I btw am a big fan of the site.

He just has some issues with our sales data. Obviously I would love for all the world to believe in it, but I understand and respect it when people don't. VGChartz is "only" there for the bigger audience for some 2 years now and as long as we get better and better, more people will automatically have more faith in our data.

But despite GoNintendo's issues, he still places our sales data, but he uses a warning with it. Well, that's fine, right? That definitely doesn't point in the direction of hate between the sites. That's utter nonsense!

Thanks for clearing that up.

The site would gain so much more credibility if the team was more transparent about how they get the numbers.
