Forums - Gaming - IR is better FPS control than Mouse & Keyboard

Yeah but you are speaking VR here, where you move yourself and do everything yourself, thus making people that are not physically fit, the "hardcore," suck at these games. You also said that having a Matrix-like technology might happen some time later but maybe not. Now adding your two statements, an FPS would require a huge field to take place, because you know, people generally move, and if they can't ust use their mind and have to do so physically they need the space to run. If howerver it is a Matrix-like type of VR, then it really wouldn't matter since everything would be as simplified as it is now in games. Also not a single game you just listed is even close to being VR, those are Wii games where motion is completely automated.

Except you can do VR without needing to move physically to move your avatar. We've had that technology for over a decade. Shoot, those games used to be in arcades everywhere. (They also sucked, but that was more because of the underlying game, than because of the tech.) Remember those?

And I'm quite aware that none of the games I listed are VR. They weren't meant to be. They're just examples of donathos' thesis, i.e. greater immersion without pressing buttons. VR would be another step in that direction.

I don't think we're on the same page level here, and it seems like we're completely talking past each other. In the interest of not clogging up this thread any further, I'll let you get in a closing statement, but I'm moving on to greener pastures.

Around the Network

I don't really get why VR would be used as a talking point anyway, especially when talked about as if it was suddenly the standard tomorrow.

Keyboard, mouse, dual analog stick, or wii-mote wont matter. We'd all get dominated by those who play paintball.

Lets see how you Wii-mote people do if you're facing people in the military in VR if you had virtual weapons that required aiming and such.

One thing I'd like to see them implement is the ability to blind-fire behind you while running. They could easily accomplish this, as since blind-fire isn't accurate, they just need to know the general direction the Wii-mote's facing.

This... is an awesome idea. Aiming the wiimote behind you over your shoulder to shoot backwards... oh the possibilities.

I'm with the OP here. I'm not a big fan of FPS on consoles because I can't get a hang of the controls well enough to be any good (or at least good against humans). On the PC, this problem is lessened, but I don't get quite the enjoyment out of it, since multiplayer is never next to you (unless you have LAN parties...), and [local] multiplayer is one of the things I like most about games. So the Wii controls give the best of both worlds - good enough accuracy, and easy enough controls, with the ability to have local multiplayer (though only CD3 had it, so still waiting on that...). Overall, it's just a more enjoyable experience.

With Wii Motion+ Addon it should be possible to take the Wii Remote over the shoulder and blind shoot or this and possible turn the camera in a limited way so it looks like the charter turns the head slightly back.

I find it to be about comfort, primarily. Same reason i would prefer Wiimote-n-Nunchuk to any joypad ever, if only it had a 2nd joystick. You can sit back, splay out, just relax as you play. Preferable to having your hands six inches from each other at all times, and definitely preferable from being hunched over a keyboard-n-mouse.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
